Neptune's Car - Letters From The Road

Neptune’s Car is a duo made up of New Hampshire guitarist/songwriter Steve Hayes and singer/songwriter Holly Hanson  from Massachusetts, together they blend a sweet sound of folk and alt-country rich in story-telling.
They have a shared passion for Lighthouse's and and historical biographies, Neptune’s Car was a clipper ship with a female captain — a true adventure of heroism on the high seas in the 1800's.

Letters from the Road is their second album, a twelve-song album of original songs.
In April 2012, Hanson and Hayes traveled to Hendersonville, Tennessee, to record with Morgan Jahnig (Old Crow Medicine Show). Jahnig plays upright bass on all twelve songs, as well as recorded, mixed, mastered, and co-produced Letters from the Road.

The debut album, Strawberry Moon, reached #4 on the FOLK-DJ chart and included the #1 song “Lighthouse Keeper.” The album was also featured on several “Best of” lists:

Hanson lived the life of a lighthouse keeper as she and her two sons cared for the Rose Island Lighthouse in Newport, Rhode Island. The music video for “Lighthouse Keeper” was shot on location at the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse and Great Island Common in New Castle, New Hampshire. Lighthouse historian, author, preservationist, tour guide, photographer, and president of the American Lighthouse Foundation Jeremy D’Entremont directed, filmed, and edited the music video.

Nashville-based Kansas Bible Company is neither from Kansas nor a Bible company, they are 11 guys mixing brass, percussion and strings and putting a big sound swing and a soulful wallop into rock and roll.  Made up of a 5-piece horn section, three guitarists, two percussionists, and a bass player. They formed at Goshen College in Northern Indiana in the summer 2008 and grew into the assemblage they are now, in 2011 they moved to Nashville and now cohabitate a formerly delipidated boarding home they converted into a living space known as the Hotel Chicaumauga.

KBC has released one full-length album title "Ad Astra Per Aspera" (April 2011) released on CD and digital download and a surf-themed EP titled "The Surf Rock Trilogy" (May 2011) released on tape and digital download for free below.  Both were recorded and produced by the band itself.  The latest album "Hotel Chicamauga" has been released on Nov. 17th

Lindsey Lou & The Flatbellys from the Great Lakes State of Michigan are a bluegrass outfit with nods to Nola and the Delta. Fronted by a young husband-wife duo Lindsay and Joshua Rilko, they play original songs written and sung soulfully by Lindsay and are steeped in great storytelling. With Joshua on mandolin and adding harmonies and Spencer, Keith, and Mark rounding it all out with steller instrumental dexterity, their recently released 'Release Your Shrouds' is a must add too your music library.

Plucked from a 60's Garage - The Sufis

Nashville's psych band The Sufis sound like something plucked right from Rhino Records Nuggets series and dropped into the 21st Century. Led by multi-instrumentist Clavin Laporte, The Sufis use vintage production techniques, such as tape manipulation and reverbed vocals, and instrumentation culled from homemade, refurbished equipment to create a groovy 60's vibe reminiscent of 'Shadows Of Knight', 'The Seeds', and 'Beau Brummels'. Huntsville, Alabama’s three piece Fistful of Beard announced on Monday the release of their NEW Album 'Until We Know Better' will be out Oct. 5th recorded with Andy Jackson of Hot Rod Circuit. I first came across these guys at Couch by Couchwest 2011, I thought there was a video around but I can't find it. After a band member shuffle right after their first EP the members are Matt Spencer - Guitar/Vox Joey Hardy -Drums David Flowers-Bass/Vox and it seems they are firing on all three cylinders

Bare bones alt-country punk rock? Yeah that fits.  Dirty geetars, bigfoot drum beats, anthemic rhythms and vocals with attitude. There is no pretense with these guys, they wear their hearts on their sleeves and pour their souls into the music, maybe not because they want to, but they have too?
It seems cathartic for them and in turn for us who listen also.
The album kicks off with the danceable rocker 'Bedroom Dance', two other stand-outs are the haunting heartfelt ballad 'Leavin' and 'White Bluff' with it's poignant storytelling. The Punkish Cowboyesque 'In The Casket' captures the guy's at their loosest jammyist best.
Lyrically all nine songs recount the tribulations of life's experiences and how they were dealt with from what was known and what was not yet learned, the type of stuff that is familiar to us all. After listening one feels vested in the story's and members of the band, to convey feelings like that is an accomplishment in it's self.  An excellent album guys.
