Skeletons in the Piano – NEW Album 'Please Don’t Die'

Jeff Ayers – Violin and Keys
Eric Donovan – Drums
Brad Thibodeau – Guitar

Once in a while a band comes along that stretches the boundaries of what is considered sacred to the norms of music. One band that has done that repeatedly is Albany’s Skeletons in the Piano and on their 3rd LP ‘Please Don’t Die’ they have shredded all the rule books of what Rock and Roll is supposed to be. Like mad scientists they have gathered parts from many genres and created a colossal monster of a sound unlike anything you’ve heard before that will cast its spell on you.

Elijah’s vocals though always powerful and unique burst forth on this album with a confident abandoness and the band displays a cohesiveness that allows them to push each other to amazing heights, the guitar work by Elijah and Brad seems like it’s ready to take off into uncharted improvised jams at any moment, with Jeff’s virtuoso violin skills ready to abide at the drop of a top hat. Dustin and Eric add a bone rattling big bad punch to the bottom end while Katarra the dancer, is featured playing percussion adding a mystical touch with hand drums, big floor toms, tambourine, woodblock and other little gems.

I had a chance to chat with Violinist Jeff Ayers about making this new record;
First, it was an absolute joy to record this record because we work so well together and have awful haircuts.  Second, Brad is a rock god on this record with all his tasty licks, and they couldn't have been achieved without buying 6 rolls of industrial tin foil and constructing a tin foil tent out of four boom mic stands that housed brads amp.  Totally cut down on the machine noise, and made it that much more powerful.
For most of the violin with a few exceptions, I played the parts on my acoustic violin in the main room, which was converted from a church from the 1920's, incidentally the same year my violin is from.  We took a boom stand and rose it twenty feet in the air with a stereo mic on it and captured the real church reverb from the rafters– Jeff Ayers

Skeletons in the Piano "Loose Kites in Harbor" Official Video

Bio:
Skeletons are not created in death, merely exposed, revealing life’s foundations. Proponents of the psychedelic grunge movement, Skeletons in the Piano falls somewhere between Black Sabbath and The Doors. They bring howling vocals, blistering riffs, complex rhythms, dance and art to every show, creating a mood and casting a spell. Started in 2007 with Elijah and Eric, the project grew fast releasing their first LP “Certain Slow Murder” in 2008. The EP “Keys” was released and Dustin and Jeff were included over the next year. The band then released their second LP, “Stranger on a Damned Staircase” in 2010, with the help of legendary hardcore and punk producer Don Fury. In 2011, the band released their second EP, “Long Pig”, and added Brad and Katarra to gear up for their next LP, “Please Don’t Die”, to be released in Spring of 2013. The band signed a deal with Magnetic Eye Records in the fall of 2012, and have played up and down the east coast, supporting acts such as Dax Riggs, The Sword, Fishbone, The Black Angels, Paleface, Black Taxi, Primer 55, The Wombats, and Paranoid Social Club. Skeletons in the Piano creates a musical experience you have never had before, proving rock and roll isn’t dead; it has just been waiting for them.

Bio: We started playing music together in November of 2010, with 6 members. We then recorded our 4 track EP "By The Way Your Shadow Looks" in January of 2011 and started performing live in February of 2011. We spent all of 2011 solidifying our line-up, we lost some members, met some people, made some friends, and found new members. In 2011 we played shows non-stop to promote ourselves. As 2012 came around the corner, we established ourselves as an 8-piece band, and then entered Warming Room Studios to record our full length debut album, which is to be released in the Spring of 2012, and it will be titled "Pretty Well Damned". So far, our journey has been very fun, and one day, the world will be saved by The Lucky Jukebox Brigade.

PRESS:

“(On the band's name): Deanna DeLuke, vocalist, ukulele player: "While The Lucky Jukebox Brigade formed in October 2010, the band name was in the works for about a decade. Growing up, I made collages on my bedroom walls, and I used to cut out interesting words from magazines and put them together. I pieced out the phrase 'The Jukebox Rebirth' when I was maybe 14 and just starting guitar lessons, thinking it would make a cool band name someday. "During the summer of 2010 when I was putting up Craigslist ads searching for band mates, I realized that I wasn't just looking for a band, I was looking for an orchestra/brigade, and would be extremely lucky to find the special bunch of people I was hoping was out there. The name then evolved into The Lucky Jukebox Brigade, and we all agreed on it, so it stuck." Tom Keyser - Times Union  Read more:

“With a band that includes multiple vocalists, guitar, bass, banjo, accordion, drum kit, percussion, violin, saw and an array of horns, The Lucky Jukebox Brigade’s scene has been described as a troubadour-led folk circus on a pirate ship raided by gypsies. If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if a bell-voiced Siren of the Tyrrhenian Sea and her admiring, chipped-tooth ancient sailors could—for one modern evening—suspend expected outcomes and gather round in revelry, this is what it would look like. Was I a skeptic at first? For sure. But now I’m fully convinced. I’ve done it, folks. I’ve joined the Brigade. Mishel Filisha - The Examiner  Read the whole article here:

Featured on Popakazooza Vol. 2, Dark, noir and melodic rockers Skeletons in the Piano from Albany NY, have tapped into the discarded pieces that past great bands either couldn't pull off or didn't know what it was they just discarded. This is a band that young musicians today will imitate tomorrow.
On their new album Stranger on a Damned Staircase, Elijah Hargrave’s vocals range from tormented blues to balladeer belter, laid on top of a labyrinthine of enigmatic songs.  And they have a Violin and belly dancers! Hot damn!  I strongly suggest you give them a listen this is damn good stuff! Hint...Eleanor Rigby, Aiding the Cyclops, The Price Put on You, No Pain, Let it Alone, and Memory Lane Needs A Garbage Man are free downloads.

They joined us for Couch By Couchwest this year on 3/12/2012: Skeletons In The Piano aroused out of slumber with this wicked good video and performance of Longpig.

Interesting Bio from their website and tons of great videos there.

Skeletons are not created in death, they are exposed, revealing life’s foundation. Skeletons in the Piano was created by Elijah Hargrave on guitar and vocals, and Eric Donovan on the drums in 2007.  In  2008, after many different musicians came and left, Jeff Ayers on electric violin and keyboards and Dustin Alexander on bass and vocals joined the band permanently. In sumer 2011 Brad Thibodeau joined on second guitar, increasing the layers of sound.  Influenced by old world music, blues, metal, antiques, paintings and rock and roll, their sound is dirty haunted rock.  Their fans are growing in numbers and are highly devoted, starting to incorporate their own creativity, with live art and dance. The band have also traveled up and down the east coast. They have played places like the Big Easy in Maine, to The Knitting Factory in NYC, to CafĂ© Da Vinci Bar in Florida opening up for national acts such as Phantogram, Dax Riggs, The Sword, Paranoid Social Club, Joe Coffee, and Paleface. Skeletons in the Piano is a force that has been playing often, skillfully and delivering their sound, a parallel to a painting, mood feeding, heart melting and feet moving, flawlessly for a few years. The fans are rabid, their shows are naturally captivating and Skeletons in the Piano have created a movement that will continuously haunt you. “The whole band toes this line of blues/rock and terrifying madness… to create a musical experience you never had before.”
Skeletons in the Piano has released two full length albums and two EP’s, numerous videos and artwork, and are renowned for the mysticism of their shows. Performances often invoke dancers; Tatiana Morales, a professionally trained belly dancer, and Katarra Peterson, an interpretive dancer and visual artist. One hundred percent a D.I.Y artist collective, and we are just getting started….
