Todd Grebe & Cold Country shine on NEW Album Citizen

Johnny Horton's Gone to Alaska is one of my favorite songs, and was used in one of Duke's most entertaining movies, but Alaska is not where I'd first look for classic country music, but from the last frontier Todd Grebe & Cold Country bring us a throwback to the stylings of traditional Country music, built on a foundation of bluegrass reminiscent of the great Bill Monroe. With a mix of humourous songs along with heartbreak and loss, this is the kind of music for sawdust dance floor sashaying, boot slapping, and beer drinking.
In these declining days of Country music, it is so refreshing to hear real country music in my ears. If the legends are watching from above they're well pleased, Todd Grebe & the talented musicians that comprise Cold Country are the real deal and Citizen should be an album everyone's talking about.
Recorded at The Butcher Shoppe studio in Nashville with Grammy-award winning recording engineer David Ferguson, famous for his work with Johnny Cash, maybe we can hope we've crossed the rubicon and Country music moves toward this direction and Todd Grebe & Cold Country will be our North star.

Todd Grebe & Cold Country are based out of the wilds of Alaska, where for years they ruled the bluegrass scene in this state. Todd’s wife and musical partner, Angela Oudean, was a key member of famed Alaska bluegrass band Bearfoot for years (Todd joined Bearfoot as well), and though it may be a surprise to some that the music they make now is hard-driving, electrified honky-tonk at its core, the truth is that there’s a strong current that unites bluegrass and country. As a songwriter, Grebe crafts songs that stick with you, and though his clever wordplay as a songwriter is a key element, it’s the rough sheen to his voice that makes this music so country and so beautiful. Grebe’s got a voice tinged with the dust of the American West and the grit of Southern living, the kind of voice that first made country music great.

After a sucessful kickstarter campaign, Todd Grebe & Cold Country rolled into The Butcher Shoppe studio in Nashville to work with Grammy-award winning recording engineer David Ferguson, famous for his work with Johnny Cash, and dove deep into a more electrified country sound. Cold Country alum Nate May traded in his mandolin for a telecaster, and Larry Atamanuik (Alison Krauss) jumped on the drums. Bassist Mike Bub (Del McCoury, Ashley Monroe) came on to co-produce the album and play bass, and special guests were invited, like pedal steel wizard Steve Hinson (George Jones), renowned Nashville session pianist Jimmy Wallace, and guitarist Megan McCormick (Jenny Lewis). Todd and Angela led the parade, trading off harmonies on the songs, and bringing Angela’s hard-driving fiddle to the fore.

Rocky Mountain Bluegrass Trout Steak Revival NEW Album Brighter Every Day

"It’s not hard to see how integral the Rocky Mountain communal tradition is to the listening experience of Brighter Every Day. Grown out of fertile ground, Trout Steak Revival represents a sense of community that has become as unshakeable as the mountains themselves. In Colorado, the air is just a little thinner and colder, making Trout Steak Revival’s unique brand of bluegrass take on an exciting and pioneering timbre that is poised to keep listeners breathless for years to come."

Trout Steak Revival’s five members – Steve Foltz (mandolin & guitar), Casey Houlihan (standup bass), Will Koster (dobro & guitar), Travis McNamara (banjo), and Bevin Foley (fiddle) – each contribute vocals and songwriting in their post-modern approach to American roots music. Their collaborative songwriting process operates more like a collective than a traditional band, with one member bringing an idea while the others flesh out the arrangement with personal touches of instrumentation and harmony. Where it’s easy to use the cold technical language of “tightness” to refer to the arrangements, a better descriptor here might be “close-knit.” Trout Steak Revival’s concise yet multi-layered arrangements are derived from their years of experience playing with and nurturing each other creatively. "Most of the members of Trout Steak Revival originate from the Midwest, having moved west to settle in Colorado. Many of the songs on Brighter Every Day center on storytelling and the varying places and experiences they’ve each come from, echoing a tension between rootedness and wanderlust. The album opens with a petition to the Union Pacific railroad, reflecting on having seen everything from the “Mojave Desert” to “San Francisco Bay,” pining for home and pleading: “Won’t you take me down your track, let your whistle blow, and bring me back.” “Ours For The Taking” was originally written by Houlihan for his fiancé while “Wind On The Mountain” is about getting caught in a snowstorm during a backpacking trip. The title track, written by McNamara on piano for the wedding of two friends, was later brought to the band and arranged for a five-piece. While the piano is retained here, Trout Steak Revival turns what might have been a meditative processional into a full-fledged celebratory dance. Finally, the album closes with “Colorado River,” a gorgeously raucous ode to their Rocky Mountain home – “I’m swimming’ in my sleep, in the Colorado River deep.”

The Bowie influence is unmistakeable, but underlining Killwave's new album Death By Distortion are the balls of Patti Smith and the snarl of Sid Vicious.

Name of the band and how’d you came up with it? 
Jim: brainstorming cool band names and came up with a good one.

Jim: George is the singer, I play guitar/synths and does the production, Erik plays bass and Bran plays drums.
Where do you live and what’s great about it? 
Jim: Chicago is great because we can afford to have a decent quality of life and still be able to make music.

Jim: Death by Distortion is our 2nd full length record, and the first as a four-piece. We all wrote the record together, except for Shake which was written after the 1st album.

First Look> NEW Video Cut a Hole from New Jersey Alt Rockers, New Politicians

New Politicians started in late 2012 with Gian Cortese on guitar, keyboards and vocals and his brother Renal Anthony on vocals and guitar. The band, now a four-piece with Erik Watson on drums and Winston Mitlo on bass, are based in Centerville, New Jersey.

I was introduced to the statuesque Argentinian über vixen powerhouse, and self described Psycho Banshee, Florencia through dp of the Dead Exs, she had recently contributed a song to the Beyond Beyond is Beyond/Bang Bang Boogaloo Psych Compilation as The Zabalas and participated in the amazing The Bowery Bangs Perform The Stones "Some Girls" LIVE show at Riff NYC.
Soon after Flor was heading on an extensive tour of Europe as a brother-sister two piece The Zabalas. While there paths crossed with Golden Animals whom I first I saw at The Dead Exs Resurrection release party at The Bowery Electric. Golden Animals was touring in support of a new desert psych album 'Hear Eye Go' and soon Flor joined them on their 2014 tour. A collaboration began which is now the side-project Fur Shades with Tommy Eisner (GA)- Vocals, Guitar & Percussion -Florencia Zaballa - Vocals, Organ & Bass and Ben Hinn - Drums.

With an obsession for American history, the UK Americana band teamed up with The University of Sheffield to chronicle with music religion and violence in antebellum Philadelphia and the adjacent districts of Kensington and Southwark a series of riots that took place between May 6 and 8 and July 6 and 7, 1844,
The Philadelphia Nativist Riots (also known as the Philadelphia Prayer Riots, the Bible Riots and the Native American Riots)  The riots were a result of rising anti-Catholic sentiment at the growing population of Irish Catholic immigrants.

Their outsider take on American history provides a unique perspective on the American experiment and uses the rich melting pot of American music to tell the tale. If you're a history buff, as I am, follow along with the continuing project.

Since its inception with the arrival of the Puritans, America was seen by English Calvinists and Evangelists as a massive mission field ripe for harvest and conversion.

Butlins 2010 advert pushed the nostalgia button with parents…who also remembered androgynous lead singer Pete Burns’s cross-dressing solo career. Course it was all an act, and by 2010 Pete was a Dad. No idea if Butlins paid in park passes.
Edit: For those of us who don’t know, Butlins is a “is a chain of large holiday camps in the United Kingdom.” Yes, I had to google it.

I heard this one recently on a big-band era broadcast and smiled, so it jumped out at me to include. Apparently it was in a Mercedes commercial during the 2000 Olympics. I thought about using the Todd Snider cover, but I like the original…

Comments: When the subject of songs used in commercials comes up, this is always the song I think of first. Hearing this song in some car commercial in the ’90s was the first time I remember stopping and thinking, “I need to know what that song is,” during a commercial. It must have been a strange boost for Clannad – the Irish group that spawned Enya and her ubiquitous “Orinoco Flow” – who had written the song back in the ’80s for a television mini-series set during The Troubles in Northern Ireland. I’m betting the commercial sold more copies of Clannad albums than it did of whatever vehicle it had been advertising (it’s telling that I can’t recall what vehicle it was).
Edit: Googled and found it was in a Volkswagen commercial in 1992 to coincide with the movie Patriot Games, where Jack Ryan kicks some IRA ass and Sean Bean’s character dies. Man, Volkswagen is ahead of the curve on advertising music! Couldn’t find the video though.

Comments: Killer live version recorded in Bristol, Connecticut, on 31 August, 1989. Until this month, this was the only version I’d ever heard. The ‘Mats bring rock credibility to this song, along with a dose of intense insanity that makes the lyrics more real and heartfelt. And I love the way Westerberg pegs on “Planet” at the end.

Comments: Mitsubishi used this in commercials for their 2001 Galant. When this album came out in ’73 I wore it out, constantly playing it, and it’s still one of my favorite albums and this is one of my favorite songs… It was Ronnie Wood, not Rod Stewart or Ronnie Lane, who sang the lead vocal for this song. Lane and Stewart were at odds at the time. Stewart did not think the song was up to his standards although both he and Lane recorded lead vocals for it. Their producer suggested Wood give it a try, and that’s the version that was used for the album, which was Faces last studio album. Lane left the group after Ooh La La was released and The Faces disbanded after their 1974 tour. This song was used in the final scene of the 1998 movie Rushmore. It was also used in the opening scene of the 2004 movie Without a Paddle.

Comments: The hard rock version was released as the B-side of the “Hey Jude,” as opposed to the slower and experimental versions (“Revolution 1″ and “9”) on the white album. See below for the download. From Wikipedia:

In 1987, “Revolution” became the first Beatles recording to be licensed for use in a television commercial. Nike paid $500,000 for the right to use the song for one year, split between recording owner Capitol-EMI and song publisher ATV Music Publishing (owned by Michael Jackson). Commercials using the song started airing in March 1987.

The three surviving Beatles, through their record company Apple, filed a lawsuit in July 1987 objecting to Nike’s use of the song. The suit was aimed at Nike, its advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy, and Capitol-EMI Records. Capitol-EMI said the lawsuit was groundless because they had licensed the use of “Revolution” with the “active support and encouragement of Yoko Ono Lennon, a shareholder and director of Apple.” Ono had expressed approval when the commercial was released, saying the commercial “is making John’s music accessible to a new generation.”

The “Revolution” lawsuit and others involving the Beatles and EMI were settled out of court in November 1989, with the terms kept secret. The financial website TheStreet.com included the Nike “Revolution” advertisement campaign in its list of the 100 key business events of the 20th century, as it helped “commodify dissent.”

Leaf Rapids debut album Lucky Stars

Fronted by husband & wife Keri & Devin Latimer, Leaf Rapids came out of their popular indie folk band, Nathan. Keri and Devin’s outstanding talents grabbed the attention of industry heavy weights, including Canadian roots music producer Steve Dawson. Dawson, a prodigious multi-instrumentalist, was eager to work with Keri and Devin on their new project Leaf Rapids via his renowned record label Black Hen Music. As a five-time Juno award-winning producer, Dawson brought his powerful talents on a wide variety of instruments, from pedal steel to electric guitar, crafting a full band sound for this rootsy duo that borders on indie roots. 
Named for a small Manitoba town, Leaf Rapids is primarily a reflection of landscape – miles and miles of grass or snow in any direction, and the northern lights dancing above. Their sound resembles the Canadian grasslands, as beautiful as they are harsh, taking notes from Canada’s soft tones and tough seasons.

Strange Majik's "Lights On" Record Release Party Tues April 28

In what may be a coincidence or a conspiracy of epic proportions, Tuesday night Strange Majik was playing his weekly gig at Belle Reve when Kim and Kanye joined by Karlie Kloss made an unexpected appearance, a flurry of social media activity soon followed including Instagram, twitter and facebook posts by our hero in this story David Pattillo aka Strange Majik. Much to his surprise dp found himself with a deleted Facebook page and a wiped Facebook Musician page. Hopefully this will be rectified in the very near future, in the meanwhile though he has his record release show for 'Lights On' coming up Tuesday April 28th and limited ways to promote it. While this blog may not make much of a dent in the larger scheme of things, I feel it necessary to help get the word out for an artist I have much respect for and has become a valued friend. If there is anything you think you can do to help spread the word about the show it would be much appreciated especially in you're in the NYC area.

Debut EP from New York City Renaissance Man, Ryan Link - Reverberations

Reverberations, is the debut EP from New York City renaissance man Ryan Link. Doing a stint in a cover band jamming on the blues, classic rock, and reggae, Reverberations adds a big robust rock n roll flavor to Alt-Country music, straddling that sweet spot between the genres.

Following his West Coast upbringing, a brief stint as a Berklee music student gave way to some local recognition as a power-pop frontman in Boston, where he released one album with Miss Fortune and an EP with Now Is Now. Around this time, Link was bit by the acting bug.

An “indefinite hiatus” led him on a sharp thespian detour into New York City theater. Less than two years after moving to the big city, Link made a Broadway debut in 2003 as rocker Roger in Jonathan Larson's Rent. He further made his mark on Broadway and across the country with the 2009 revival of Hair, the iconic American tribal love-rock musical.

Now with the release of Reverberations, Link is preparing to establish himself as a permanent fixture on the alt-country music scene.
