Listen: Hurray for the Riff Raff - Small Town Heroes

New album from Hurray for the Riff Raff coming February 11, 2014 on ATO Records

Produced by Segarra and engineered by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes), ‘Small Town Heroes’ features twelve new, original songs all written or co-written by Segarra, with support from a vivid cast of Crescent City musicians including her longtime right-hand-man on fiddle, Yosi Perlstein, keyboard player Casey McAllister, and two members of the Deslondes: Sam Doores on guitar and Dan Cutler on bass.

NPR has said that Hurray for the Riff Raff "sweeps across eras and genres with grace and grit,” never more so than on ‘Small Town Heroes.’ On the hedonist country lament “I Know It’s Wrong (But That’s Alright)” Segarra sings to a forbidden love “I’ll feed you watermelon off the vine,” while on “The Body Electric" she exposes the misogyny of the traditional murder ballad, and warns "Delia’s gone, but I’m settling the score."
Ultimately though, many of the songs embody that most magical and fated of American cities, New Orleans. Segarra bears witness to a wave of violence that struck the St. Roch neighborhood in "St. Roch Blues;" yearns for a night at BJ's Bar in the Bywater in "Crash on the Highway;" and sings of her own Lower Ninth Ward home in "End of the Line."

‘Small Town Heroes’ follows Hurray for the Riff Raff’s self-released 2012 album 'Look Out Mama,' which led to a performance at the Newport Folk Festival, and praise from Mojo, which compared Segarra to “a soulful, young Loretta Lynn,” and The New York Times which hailed the group as "part of the loosely cohered movement of younger musicians embracing and reframing American roots music, giving it a polish of currency but otherwise leaving its bones intact."

Hurray For The Riff Raff, Live In Concert: Newport Folk Festival '13

Alynda lee Segarra of Hurray For The Riff Raff is IMHO one of the most powerfully poignant singer/songwriters of this young century. After leaving home at an early age to travel the country, she eventually settled in New Orleans where she began to perform and record with a revolving cast of musicians.
She released two records (2008’s It Don’t Mean I Don’t Love You and 2010’s Young Blood Blues) mostly consisting of delicate folk and country songs. In 2011, the UK record label Loose Music (Felice Brothers, Dawes, Deer Tick), released Hurray for the Riff Raff, an album that collected the best songs from those records. The Times of London named Hurray for the Riff Raff one of the Top Ten Albums of 2011, NPR names them one of the new faces of Folk, I’m glad their catching on.
On July 1st '13 they released one of the best covers albums you’re ever likely to hear, “My Dearest Darkest Neighbor” with Mod Mobilian Records and This Is American Music.
On July 27th they took they’re rootsy folk and country sound and wowed the crowds at Newport Folk Festival. Listen and grab the full set.

Hurray for the Riff Raff’s album “My Dearest Darkest Neighbor”

Mod Mobilian Records and This Is American Music announce the public release of Hurray for the Riff Raff’s album “My Dearest Darkest Neighbor” on July 1st, 2013.
“These are songs I’ve gathered over the years. I’ve taken them with me wherever I go. For a musician who lives most of her life on the road, the songs you know and love are one of your only consistencies. They carry a feeling of home. These songs have been there for me in a dark hour. They’ve guided me down long roads that stretched through time. They have illuminated me on the human spirit, its unbreakable will, its strength and power.  The songwriters who’ve penned them have inspired me endlessly. I have studied them because I hope to never cease my education on how to write a good tune. I threw on two songs I’ve written that were building blocks for me. These are my attempts at the folk tradition of writing a song where someone else left off. I try to learn from the greats. These are soul songs, let’s sing them together. “  - Alynda lee Segarra

Hot Dang! Yodeling! Hurray for the Riff Raff - Get this DL

Hot diggity dang do I like this! Hurray for the Riff Raff

With its sweet southern influences and gorgeous folk-meets-bluegrass instrumentation, Hurray for the Riff Raff is a new band with an old soul -- and a slew of genre-crossing influences. Founded by vocalist Alynda lee Segarra, the project is a culmination of her years traveling, living in New Orleans, and eventually finding a niche with honky-tonk band The Tumbleweeds. "Look Out Mama," the first single from their upcoming album of the same name, combines classic folk and southern rock elements with sleepy melodies, beautifully husky vocals, and a slow, honey-drizzled tone. Give it a spin, download it for a limited-time, and grab the new album when it drops May 1.

Hurray for the Riff Raff is Alynda lee Segarra, a 25 year old Puerto Rican from the Bronx. After leaving home at an early age to travel the country, she eventually settled in New Orleans where she began to perform and record with a revolving cast of musicians. She released two records (2008's It Don't Mean I Don't Love You and 2010's Young Blood Blues) mostly consisting of delicate folk and country songs. In 2011, the UK record label Loose Music (Felice Brothers, Dawes, Deer Tick), released Hurray for the Riff Raff, an album that collected the best songs from those records. The Times of London named Hurray for the Riff Raff one of the Top Ten Albums of 2011. Phil Alexander, the Editor-in-Chief of Mojo Magazine, raved that they "have immense potential and seductive power" and named them second best band at SXSW 2011.

Back in the States, Alynda met up with a young honky-tonk band called the Tumbleweeds, just as she began to expand her musical palette to include rock n roll, pop, and soul. In the tradition of Bob Dylan with Band and Neil Young with Crazy Horse, Alynda recruited the Tumbleweeds to be her touring band, drastically altering the sound of Hurray for the Riff Raff.

Look Out Mama is the result of almost two years of Alynda and the Tumbleweeds criss-crossing the USA, playing over 100 shows in small bars and clubs. Recorded in Nashville and produced by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes), Look Out Mama is an exploration of classic American music as interpreted by Alynda lee Segarra. From the Swamp Pop of "Little Black Star" to the Classic Country of "Look Out Mama", to the Psychedelia of "Ode to John and Yoko" and even the Surf-Rock of "Lake of Fire," Look Out Mama covers a wide array of musical ground, with every song unified by Alynda's soulful vocals and expert songwriting.
