Johnny High-Hat - Heart Of A Clown

We all want to run off to the circus at one point in our lives, for me it happened twice once when I was a wee lad and later after I got out of the service and took a trip around Florida before heading home and stopped in Sarasota and visited the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus winter quarters. I wanted to be a clown.

John Highkin did run off to the circus not as a clown but as co-founder and artistic director of San Diego’s Fern Street Circus. He created and produced circus shows and events from 1991 to 2003, commissioning original music and playing in the band from 1998 to 2003.

After 30 years as a sideman, this mandolin-playing circus impresario has stepped out on his own as Johnny High-Hat to tackle everything from well-known standards to vintage country, and lesser known Texas swing gems, on this debut ‘Heart of a Clown’

Working in theater in the ‘80’s (studying at Bertolt Brecht’s Berliner Ensemble in East Berlin in 1987) Johnny High-Hat brings a theatrical presence to his contemporary interpretations of western swing and traditional songs.  High-Hat tackles everything from well-known standards (“Pennies from Heaven,” “Route 66,” and “September Song”), vintage country (“Rockin’, Rollin’ Ocean,” “(Now and Then There’s) A Fool Such As I”) and lesser known gems (“It Must Be Love” and “A Thousand Goodnights”) to present a cohesive set of songs that address hunger, longing, and sadness, change and affirmation.

Swept Under The Rug.mp3
Ain't got a good thing to hold on to, ain’t proud to be this far. Still got a lot of things to do but only a half tank in my car. The mountains are big but not big enough and the ocean's width in my range. Loosely feeling is always deceiving; it rains too much on a cloudy day
A jaded heart and a jealous soul, a sad mind, it lost control, I won’t submit I’m worry free but this worry is growing like the trees, in times we wait for the bomb to drop our friends are understanding while others are not I can't believe these problems have grown so long...swept under the rug, my mind is tossed like a salad mixed liked greens and scrambled like eggs, baked like beans and sprinkled with dressing, to feel better I don’t know what it would take.

Blair Crimmins and the Hookers - Live in Little Five

I’m an old movie buff; actually I’m an old buff. I love the romanticized depiction of 1920’s Dixieland/Ragtime in old black and white movies, the music is swinging, the characters intriguing and the whole era seems like it would have been the bees knees to live in and I am enthused about the attention it is getting in this young new century. Blair Crimmins and the Hookers capture this moment in time but with a wonderful modernist twist.

Blair Crimmins began his current music career in Atlanta, Georgia, with a determination to bring Ragtime and 1920’s style Dixieland Jazz to new audiences. What he created was a sound that is at once modern while being deeply rooted in the past. Now four years—and five hundred shows later,— he has toured the Eastern United States playing large venues and has opened for national acts such as Mumford & Sons and O.A.R.A multi-instrumentalist and music academic, Crimmins writes songs and arrangements for a classic New Orleans style horn section consisting of trumpet, clarinet, and trombone.

Live in Little Five released 7/22 was captured in front of an enthusiastic audience on December 1, 2012 at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, and features performances of the full 7-piece band with Dixieland horns, rowdy ragtime piano and gypsy jazz guitar.
“This music is about how I feel living in modern times, but with an old soul,” said Crimmins. “The Variety Playhouse in Little Five Points has been my favorite venue in Atlanta since I was a kid, and the old-time decor of the place is a great setting for our vintage-style music and burlesque show.”
