Dirty, lo-fi and out of control, Brockley Forest

Dirty, lo-fi and out of control, Bristol’s Brockley Forest debut EP will test the volume control on your amp.
The groups debut self-titled E.P is out now and available on iTunes

Brockley Forest
Sharing a bond similar to The Kills and influenced by many of the rock duo’s coming out of the lo-fi garage rock scene.  Brockley Forest’s unique set up creates a dirty, sleazy depth of sound with an acoustic guitar fed through a tiny distorted amp and minimalist drum kit.

Although the duo have been friends since the age of 11, their friendship was truly cemented during a 3 month trip to America, covering 10,000 miles and culminating in 2 weeks in LA, where they lived in the desert, got adopted by a hippy commune, hung out with celebrities in the Viper room and got taken under the wings of two Australian millionaires who were out to blow their fortunes in Vegas.

In a former incarnation, the band have played support slots in every notable Bristol venue, including the Louisiana, a one time stopping place for The Black Keys and The White Stripes.  As Brockley Forest, they’re currently building a solid reputation in Bristol’s underground rock and garage venues and are due to camp out in the back of their transit this Summer for a 30 date tour across the UK.

Brockely Forest is the name of the forest close to their childhood home, where as boys they spent many of their pre teen years immersing themselves in fantasy and adventure. It was during these years that Dec also discovered his talent for literature. Along with song lyrics, in the way of a true beatnik, Dec is also a hard working scriptwriter. His most recent offering being a story of love and coming of age in the script ‘Cadbury Hill’,. Drummer Seb, also a keen photographer enjoys documenting the everyday life of the band.

Black Jake & The Carnies NEW EP Watching, Waiting

I have been a huge fan of Black Jake and the Carnies since their 2008 release Where The Heather Don't Grow The new aptly titled EP  'Watching, Waiting' released in April since that is exactly what I’ve been doing with these fellows; The five songs find the lads taking their sideshow, carvinalesque sounds and adding some Ole timey religion tent revival gospel with their signature ’Only we know what’s really going on behind the curtain’ attitude. Comprised of Black Jake (banjo, vocals, songwriting), Gus Wallace (fiddle), Andy Benes (mandolin, backing vocals), Jumpin' Joe Cooter (bass), Billy "the Kingpin" LaLonde (percussion, backing vocals), and J.C. Miller (accordion, backing vocals), are six hard-working men from Ypsi who wallow in the imagery of sideshows and carnivals.

"When you grow up in a small town, you have hair down your back and everyone's a redneck, you get called a freak a lot," Jake told Detroit’s Metro Times in 2011. "So I get attracted to the outcasts, the freaks, being somebody who's on display."

Recorded in the winter of 2012 at Big Sky Studios in Ann Arbor, MI, just prior to the departure of long-time mandolinist Zach Pollack, "
Released 23 April 2013
Jake Zettelmaier -- Banjo, lead vocals
Gus Wallace -- Fiddle
Zack Pollock -- Mandolin, backing vocals
Joe Cooter -- Bass
Billy LaLonde -- Drums, Washboard, Harmonica, backing vocals
J.C. Miller -- Accordion, backing vocals
Everybody -- gang vocals

Introducing.....Brian Lee Hillhouse

Guest Blogger Jeanette Lynne
Jeanette Lynne is an accomplished singer/songwriter &
music buff from West Chester, PA. Proud defender of all
worthy melody makers, coffee lovers, apartment dwellers,
and six string aficionados.

Introducing.....Brian Lee Hillhouse

Brian Hillhouse is an experimental Indie folk singer songwriter from Mississippi. A lot of sincere questioning and emotion can be found in his latest efforts: "Find Better Days", and "Buried".
Brian's low soothing voice, is matched with great care to his acoustic guitar work. Both equally balanced throughout his music.
Like thick mahogany syrup over a hot flapjack, "Find Better Days" rolls over the airwaves, welcoming you to hear the singer's story unravel.
Everyone can relate to needing a fresh start, a clean slate. In this song Brian sings of finding who or what you love, and never letting go.
"What could I do without you; I'd never be the same,
Find your inspiration and never let it move
Find your destination and see it through"

I can hear influences of an early Dallas Green in Brian’s latest song Buried;
A sad but catchy song, with thought provoking lyrics.
"What am I worth?
What do I truly deserve?
Only what I was given at birth?

I found one of my favorite lines Brian wrote from the song “To Death” from his first EP “25".
In “To Death”, he sings about how he wishes he could turn back time,
so that he could live another full life with his love, and love her ‘til death do us part’.
"If we could be young again, I would love you to death"

I recommend checking out Brian’s FacebookBandcamp, Soundcloud, Tumblr and Vimeo pages to hear more of his previous work!

Dorado - Anger, Hunger, Love and the Fear of Death

Birmingham, Alabama’s Jody Nelson, front man for Through the Sparks, and contributor on Wooden Wand’s record Blood Oaths of the New Blues earlier this year, has a new project, Dorado.

I was instantly grabbed by the short hairs when I first listened to Dorado’s Anger, Love and the Fear of Death, and wondered out loud, how do I describe this, I’m not much for comparisons and such, believing that a bands influences, I don’t know their influences, lend to their sound and are not a direct interpretation. But, on this one I kept thinking what the heck is this, a super group of Lou Reed, Bowie, Iggy, and Nick Cave backed by Mott the Hopple?
Tying together different sounds from power-pop, surf-rock, to folk-psych, the album creates a primoradial soup of rock n roll. Each song comes with it own genre attached in the credits, Baroque Garage, Wrong Blues, Bad Art, Rapture Rock, and Home-organ Enthusiasm? All which is fitting as said earlier, how do I describe this? Your best bet is to put it in your ear and just enjoy it's adventurous journey.

Jeanette Lynne - You've Got Me

Jeanette Lynne's Bio states> "She is an up and coming songwriter from West Chester, Pennsylvania" with her debut album 'You've Got Me' I think it's safe to say, She has arrived!  Among the many outstanding female vocalists out there these days she holds her own in both songwriting and vocal style. A very accomplished guitar player the album is filled with gorgeous melodies and harmonies with a dream like quality that is both soothing and profound.  The whole album from start to finish is like a fresh breeze that’s needed occasionally to clear away the cobwebs in the Indie scene. Highly recommended listening. Available  now on her bandcamp page and iTunes.
