Acoustic Reverie: Denver's Monocle

Monica Whittington- lead vocals, guitar
Bill Huston- lead guitar, vocals
Eric Wiggs- upright bass, vocals
Josh Moore- drums
Ben Blechman- Fiddle/violin

With her sweet and soaring vocal melodies, Monica Whittington leads a band of Boulder, Colorado’s finest musicians on an acoustic exploration of the heart. Monocle blends stirring vocals, flatpicked guitar, stellar fiddle, kickin' drums and earthy upright bass in a sound that will move your body, mind, and soul. They have developed a unique take on American acoustic music that we call “acoustic reverie” brand new, original music rooted in the traditions of Telluride bluegrass, borrowing some of the sounds of Gillian Welch, John Hartford, and Steve Earle and guided by the spirit of the troubadour wanderings that led Townes Van Zandt through the San Juan Mountains on horseback.

A native of Colorado Springs, bandleader and namesake Monica Whittington has been singing for most of her life. Drawing inspiration from her musical family, she has a deep history in choral singing that precedes her foray into the world of original music.

They recently ended a successful kickstarter campaign to fund a new album which they are currently working on. The album will feature 11 or 12 of our original songs, produced by David G. Tiller, the man behind the amazing sounds of Elephant Revival, Taarka, and ThaMuseMeant.

Angela Perley & The Howlin' Moons - Nowhere is Now Here

Inspired by artists like The Carter Family, Loretta Lynn, and Billy Holiday and writers like John Yeats, Mark Twain, and Sylvia Plath, Angela Perley and the Howlin’ Moons play Honky Tonkicana, pure, robust get out of your barstool and dance music!
Angela Perley & The Howlin' Moons formed in 2009 around singer-songwriter Angela Perley. The group consists of Chris Connor, Billy Zehnal, Steve Rupp, and Perley. Perley's music is nostalgic and heavily influenced by old time country roots music and rock and roll. Perley's song delivery is unique in the way she manipulates words and phrasings. Many songs contain themes of the moon, love, railroads, and death. The Howlin' Moons' live shows are high energy Americana-tumble- and-roll and are always captivating and authentic. Since 2010 the group has released a four part EP series: Black Cat (2010), Yellow Moon (2011), Fireside (2011), and Nowhere is Now Here (Dec. 2012).

Brown Bird - New Album "Fits Of Reason"

Rhode Islanders’ David Lamb and MorganEve Swain, aka Brown Bird, following up on thier 2011 release 'Salt For Salt' which had a spot on my best of list of that year, have released the first track from their forthcoming self-produced album, 'Fits of Reason' due out Apr-2 and announced spring tour dates.
Firmly anchored in the foundations of blues and American roots music, the duo's combination of  foot-percussion, upright bass, violin, cello and balladeer vocals mix to create an intriguing cemetery Folk sound.
On Fits of Reason we can hear MorganEve expanding her siren vocals adding to the harmonic layers.

Pre-order the album from their Bandcamp page.

If you missed 2011's 'Salt For Salt' I suggest you rectifiy that.

Biography
Thomas Paine once said, “reason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it”. Brown Bird’s new self-produced release, Fits of Reason, raises its hat to Mr. Paine in a flurry of cerebral themes that surface in the album’s eleven songs.

The band’s two members, David Lamb and MorganEve Swain, continue to build their sound from the foundations of blues and American roots music, utilizing the simple foot-percussion, violin, cello and upright bass that they have become known for, while expanding Swain’s vocal presence and flaunting Lamb’s lyrical mastery. Recorded in their home-state of Rhode Island at Machines With Magnets, Fits of Reason is inspired by the writings of Omar Khayyam, Christopher Hitchens, and Plato, among others, and grapples with the human condition in a smooth but unapologetic departure from the band’s previous release, Salt for Salt. With the introduction of electric guitar, electric bass, and a more prominent display of the band’s Middle Eastern, metal, and psych-rock influences, Fits of Reason delves into heavier territory and invites the listener to hear with discerning ears.

Brown Bird spent most of 2012 on the road, supporting Trampled By Turtles, The Devil Makes Three, Yonder Mountain String Band and Horse Feathers, and wowed the crowd at the Newport Folk Festival with their first main-stage appearance. The band will continue criss-crossing the US in 2013, with a full US tour planned in April, and an appearance scheduled at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, CA. Fits of Reason will be released on Supply & Demand Music on April 2nd, 2013.

The Miners - Miners Rebellion

Andy Shahan, Keith Marlowe, David Thornburgh and Scott Donnini at The Grape Room.

The Miners are an original alt country band based in Philadelphia, PA. The Miners are: Keith Marlowe (lead vocals, guitar), Andy Shahan (drums, vocals), David Thornburgh (pedal steel and lap steel guitars), and Scott Donnini (bass, vocals).

Miners' Rebellion their debut EP is full of great orignal songwriting, sharp steel, toe tapping beats and unique vocals, though many times throughout the album I felt like I was listening to The Traveling Wilburys Alt/Country ego. Looking forward to more from this band, definely a band on the rise in the Americana scene.

Follow them on Twitter Give them a thumbs up on Facebook

The Miners debut release, Miner’s Rebellion, is a six-song EP recorded over 3 years at Match-up Zone Studio (aka Keith Marlowe’s basement) was released November 5, 2012. The EP’s 6 tracks (Miners’ Rebellion, I Recall, Doggone, Norton’s Pond, W.T.A, and Cold Steel) are all original songs penned by Keith Marlowe. Miners’ Rebellion was recorded entirely on 8-track ½” reel-to-reel tape. The tracks were then digitally mixed and mastered at Philly’s legendary MilkBoy The Studio. Marlowe produced and engineered all of the 8-track sessions while Marlowe, along with MilkBoy’s Joel Metzler, mixed the EP. Miners’ Rebellion is self-released through Marlowe’s own Match-up Zone Music and is available in both CD (at Bandcamp, the band’s website and select independent record stores) and digital formats (at iTunes, Amazon, etc.).

What Others Are Saying
No Depression, Easy Ed (Jan 08, 2013) –“This EP... makes me feel good. And I respect it... It has a place at this table. It’s another story of “everyman”...as they are us.”

AmeicanaUK, Michael Farley (January 31, 2013) “The Miners have a lot of talent as this EP shows, let’s hope a full length album is not too far behind.”

Teenage Kicks, Trip McClatchey (Nov 16, 2012)“A six song cornucopia of lilting, mournful melodies..Lead singer and songwriter Keith Marlowe's no-nonsense vignettes recall the dusty charm of Green on Red's Dan Stuart.”

Get It On Vinyl, TJ (Nov 12, 2012) “A band that is willing to go against the norm and write their own rules when it comes to producing music…“Miners’ Rebellion” leads off with the title track, telling an amazing story with a strong pedal steel driving the prominent unique vocals of lead singer Keith Marlowe."

Jim's Country Music Reviews, Jim Moulton (Jan 13, 2013) “ This EP has the feel of the great alt/country groups of the last three decades, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons.”

Review: Ten Foot Polecats NEW Album 'Undertow'

Jim Chilson (Guitar) Chad Rousseau (Drums) Jay Scheffler (Vocals & Harp)

The new album from Boston's Ten Foot Polecats ‘Undertow’ is gonna drag you out to the woodshed and kick your ass,  a mixture of deep Mississippi mud, Chicago grit, Texas twang with flashes of San Fran psych layered as thick as the Boston molasses flood.

'Undertow’ Kicks off like fast moving freight train barreling down the tracks, with its smokestack spewing fire and sparks, geetar licks churning like steel wheels and harp hollowing like an unholy whistle, hold the hell on it’s gonna be a bare knuckle ride. Jim’s stellar guitar dexterity packs a wallop to every song,  Singer Jay Scheffler’s  diverse vocals and harp add distinct style flavors to each song from raw blues to countrified rocker, tying it all together are Chad Rousseau’s unswerving beats on the skins like the steam engine stoker shoveling coal into the furnace keeping it full steam ahead.
