Dave Borins - The Room Lights Up

After traveling China, Japan, Indonesia, India, Peru, Nepal with his guitar as a passport Dave Borins returned to Toronto, with the voice of a comforting wizened sage and his fierce energy he has become a fixture in the Toronto Indie scene playing solo and with a rotating cast of rock and string band players.

His aptly titled latest release 'The Room Lights Up' was recorded live at Hugh’s Room and produced by Chris Stringer (Timber Timbre, Wooden Sky, Obijou) and mixed and mastered in Vancouver by Juno Award winning producer and musician Steve Dawson.
Dave had the brilliant idea of having a show to record and fund the pressing of his new album. On everyone’s table was a form to fill out, which included a place for your suggestion of what his new album should be titled.
Have a listen to five tracks from the album, then head on over to his site and get it from iTunes or Amazon

The Lost Recording: Abstract Artimus - Barba De Dendritas

Raw punk rock served with jazzy arrangements, southern grit and a mad man's attitude.
“Abstract Artimus is the embodiment of me if I was in the Manson Family. That’s Abstract Artimus, my crazy side,” says Pace, a grin just visible through his biblical beard.

Abstract Artimus (Artimus Alexander Pace) is an American music composer and performer from the deep South currently living in Manhattan, New York. After nearly ten years of Fry Cook, the band called it quits in 2006 due to unresolved issues. Artimus then formed Death Defying Dires, whose first show was as a supporting act for Gwar. Several successful shows were played and an EP was recorded, but after the other members quit to pursue the family life, Artimus had to devise a new plan. He went on to write and perform as a one man band with random musicians joining him over the years. In 2009, after the release of "God is Mad" he added a backing band and an extensive European and North American tour followed. Abstract Artimus has toured the US, Canada and Europe both as a one man band and with his backing band the Torture Children which consists of a revolving door of musicians. He is currently touring and writing music at a constant pace.

"Barba de Dendritas" was released in early 2010 on Arizona based Liberal Squid Records, lost and now found and available as a free download.

Coming in January, The Payroll Union - The Mule & The Elephant

Following their two stellar March 2012 EP's 'Your Obedient Servant' and 'Underfed and Underpaid' Sheffield (UK) troubadour's The Payroll Union, have their debut LP 'The Mule & The Elephant' dropping on January 19th '13, lead by singer Pete David and backed by Ben Fuller, Paul Heath and Tom Baxendale, they have a refreshingly honest outsiders take on U.S History that those of us on this side of the pond should take our blinders off and pay attention to, set to deliciously dark, Americana and Country with an occasional touch of Ennio Morricone. This month they have released a single 'Peggy's Tavern' from the new album  available for download until 12/16

The Lansing Unionized Vaudeville Spectacle, huge thanks to Devilyn Carver (*a kindred spirit) for tweeting a video of this awesome cabaret gypsy jazz ensemble from Lansing, MI and putting them on my radar. This one band incorporates everything I envisioned when I started my Popakazooza fantasy festival a year ago, Americana, Gypsy-Jazz, Blues, Vaudeville with a sound straight out of the past but fresh and new for this century. How you can get your hands on these recordings I have been unable to find, but their 2011 EP Rust Belt Jukebox Blues is available as a free download.

Listen: Their new full length album

Since early in the year 2011, The Lansing Unionized Vaudeville Spectacle has been performing high energy theatrical shows on street corners, bars and various stages around Michigan. Over time, we evolved from a loose conglomeration of artists on the streets to a dedicated band of performers with hand built props, scripts and pyrotechnics. We have become more of a family than anything else- a family of creatives, hard-workers, misfits and trouble-makers. We put a lot of work into our shows, and want more than anything to provide the audience with a fun and unique experience. So, when we started contemplating a full length album, we were faced with the dilemma of how to capture on tape the energy and soul of the live performances we've put so much time into crafting.
This album was recorded in fashion that combines the methods of artists active in the early 1900's to the 1950's. A triangulated band (vocals and quiet instruments in front, loud instruments staggered to the the back) and a Decca Tree microphone setup helped us achieve a sound that remained faithful to older recordings.
Musically, these songs represent a sea change in our compositional methods. Namely, a shift from a single composer and lyricist to a collaborative effort by a team of musicians and writers. Most of these numbers took seed as a basic idea or chord progression or line of verse, and were built over time as we rehearsed, performed and wrote.
I remember the moment when Iris showed up to practice and pulled out a page full of lyrics that became "Left Foot Lament", when Conrad shifted gears to drop-D tuning on "Save the Date" for the first time, when Scotty suggested the break on "Whiskey and Wine", when Teri came up with the tempo change on "Rust Belt Blues", Allen's ample advice regarding music theory, and all the other times individuals made songs stronger through their input.
This album represents the fruit of our love's (mostly) unpaid labour. We sincerely hope you enjoy it as you work and play.
