Their EP ‘Sorry’ has an extensive mixture of influences combined into just three Acoustic-Folk songs, well-crafted robust instrumentation, strong songwriting and sprightly vocals carry throughout the EP. The Payroll Union Faith & Fear in Philadelphia Project Launch

Faith & Fear in Philadelphia
The Payroll Union / David J Roch / Gregory S. Davies Band
Monday 21st October 2013, at The Harley, doors 7.30pm
Tickets £5 (£4 NUS) available from The Harley, The Wick at both Ends, Record Collector, The Old Sweet Shop

In an unexpected collaboration, Sheffield Americana band, The Payroll Union, have teamed up with The University of Sheffield for a project on religion and violence in the mid-19th Century American city. Launching their project at The Harley, the band will perform new songs that will form the basis of an album that re-interprets the stories and characters of Philadelphia at its most eruptive. On the night, there will be illustrations by Samuel Paul Skillington and film-makers Optical Jukebox will be filming for a short film on the project.

They will be joined by two great songwriting talents. The Gregory S Davies Band, whose debut album, Santiago, explores gypsy jazz, country, latin and blues. Having only formed at the beginning of the year, they have already headlined a stage at Tramlines this summer and recently were played on BBC Radio 2's Dermot O'Leary Show. Both inventive and melodic, the band's explorative nature makes them a real treat to discover.

David J Roch will be familiar to many, both in his Sheffield home and beyond. His debut album, Skin & Bones, produced in part by Jim Sclavunos (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Grinderman), demonstrated the incredible power of his voice and the heartbreaking nature of his songs. As the Guardian said, his voice "can soar to ethereal heights as effortlessly as it plumbs re-raw depths." Most recent single, 'Don't Let Go Yet', was used in the American TV show, So You Think You Can Dance, and his new album is due in early 2014.

Their debut LP 'The Mule & The Elephant' released January 19th '13, lead by singer Pete David and backed by Ben Fuller, Paul Heath and Tom Baxendale, they have a refreshingly honest outsiders take on U.S History, set to deliciously dark, Americana and Country with an occasional touch of Ennio Morricone.

Boys School - A Friend Of Mine

Boys School keep Old School Rock & Roll fresh and vibrant, the follow-up to 2012’s excellent self-titled LP, their recently released EP ‘A Friend Of Mine’ an accelerated gallop with Brett's unique vocals channeling some of the great styles of R&R as they riff, shred and bang out tunes both familiar sounding yet aggressively original.

And that's all that matters, that there's risk and intention behind it, energy. Nobody's gonna miss a thing if you're playing hard. And I mean "hard" not like loud and heavy, but intensely focused and giving everything that you've got." - Brett Farkas

MUSCLE SHOALS: Listen Gregg Allman on Duane & The Alllman Brothers Band

Listen to Gregg Allman talk about how one of the greatest American rock and roll bands of all time came to be:

Now in Theatres, on iTunes and On Demand

Located alongside the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals, Alabama is the unlikely breeding ground for some of America's most creative and defiant music. Under the spiritual influence of the "Singing River," as Native Americans called it, the music of Muscle Shoals has helped create some of the most important and resonant songs of all time. At its heart is Rick Hall who founded FAME Studios. Overcoming crushing poverty and staggering tragedies, Hall brought black and white together in Alabama's cauldron of racial hostility to create music for the generations. He is responsible for creating the "Muscle Shoals sound" and The Swampers, the house band at FAME that eventually left to start their own successful studio, known as Muscle Shoals Sound. Greg Allman, Bono, Clarence Carter, Mick Jagger, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Keith Richards, Percy Sledge and others bear witness to Muscle Shoals' magnetism, mystery and why it remains influential today.

Shonna Tucker & Eye Candy - 'A Tell All'

Shonna Tucker - bass, vocals, acoustic guitar
John Neff - pedal steel, guitars, sitar, vocals, guiro
Bo Bedingfield - guitar, vocals, shaker
Clay Leverett - drums, vocals
Neil Golden - keys
Extra special Guest - Spooner Oldham-  Fender Rhodes on "Lonely People"

Shonna Tucker takes center stage with her new band Eye Candy, writing all the songs on 'A Tell All' giving her a platform to stretch her amazing vocals, the album showcase’s that the former Drive By Truckers is a mighty force to reckon with in her own right. The talented band members she’s gathered around herself lay down some extensive, tight and well-crafted instrumentation.

Dig on the grooving organ mixed with big southern rock guitar riffs on 'Since Jimmy Came' you'll be singing along to this one all day. Atmospheric arrangements accompany the steady beat of the vocally enchanting ballads 'Your Jealousy' and 'Arielle'. The track 'A Family Dinner' from which the album title is derived is funky fun!
Come on gather around that table, We goin' have us a ball We goin' eat and tell some things that might make your chicken skin crawl Have you heard about old so and so and can you pass the cornbread please
'Old Fashioned' is a short acoustic track filled with Shonna's beautiful vocals. 'Linda Please' a cautionary tale features noirish spaghetti western riffs you all know I dig. 'Austin Side' starts with some churchy organ at confessional, and features echoey dueling guitar riffs.
I think my favorite track is ‘I Brought A Pie’ the band riffs out a rowdy dark rocker and Shonna gets downright bluesified, singing...
I brought a pie and I brought a lover and you brought all of your gunsI just sat there and took it like a lady in the meeting in the hot Georgia sun
Cosing out the album is another acoustic track the wistfully lamenting 'Lonely People' and a gorgeous and sultry love song 'You Went All The Way'  It is a fantastic album I would venture to guess will be on many end of year lists.

Shonna’s band, Eye Candy, includes four of the most prolific players in the Athens music scene: John Neff on guitar and pedal steel, Bo Bedingfield on guitar, Neil Golden on keyboards, and Clay Leverett on drums. For nearly twenty years, John has been one of the town’s most sought-after collaborators in the studio and on the road. Bo is singer/songwriter and leader of the Wydelles, and has backed up several other local songwriters on drums and guitar. Clay led the Athens rock band Lona for eight years before starting honky-tonk band the Chasers, and has played drums and toured with Bright Eyes and Now It’s Overhead. Neil, former member of the Glands and Elf Power, also writes and sings for Golden Brown.

Shonna Tucker and Eye Candy’s debut album, “A Tell All” will be released October 15th on Sweet Nectar Records/Red Eye, and the band will hit the road to bring this killer collection of songs to life.
“All these songs came fast, in a few months time,” explains Tucker, ‘There was no theme or plan at all. Inspiration came from what was happening around me and that was a lot of different things. The first single, ‘Since Jimmy Came’ is about a very young and single mom who thought she had found true love until she had her son. The realization of priorities. Nature at it’s finest.”

TRACKLISTING:

1) Since Jimmy Came

2) Your Jealousy

3) Arielle
4) A Family Dinner
5) Old Fashioned
6) Linda Please

 7) Austin Side
8) I Brought A Pie
9) Lonely People
10) You Went All The Way

The band also has an alternate version of ‘Lonely People’ on the Country Fried Rock Vol. 2 compilation. (All proceeds go directly to Nuci's Space a charity dedicated to preventing musicians' suicide.)

In March Shonna delighted the Couch By Couchwest crowd with a wonderful rendition of Bob Luman’s “Lonely Women Make Good Lovers” from the CXCW stage in Athens, Georgia.

Stewart Eastham - "The Man I Once Was"

Stewart Eastham’s first record since fronting country-rock band Day of the Outlaw captures what I like best about Alt-Country, lots of ole time vocal twang, pedal steel, lap steel, piano, violin and boot shuffling, knee slapping Hee Hollerin' (on my part)

Eastham’s songs span the breadth of the Americana realm:  from the old school country sounds of “The Lights of Tennessee” and “Livin’ With Bad Decisions,” to the funky southern rock of “Broken Hearted Lovers” and “Crawl Up In Your Bottle,” to the lush, layered arrangements of “It’s Understood” and title track “The Man I Once Was.”   Eastham is both a prolific and poetic writer with a deep love of storytelling, honed not only through music but also via a deep passion for literature and art films (and their less “noble” counterparts: genre fiction and genre movies.)

After a lifetime on the West Coast, Eastham recently found himself at both a personal and artistic crossroads.  He found respite from the darkness of his final L.A. years in the change of pace and peace of mind he discovered in Nashville.  “It’s my ‘L.A. to Nashville’ album,” explains Eastham. “As the song ‘Born In California’ exemplifies, my life has always been based around a series of dichotomies:  city vs. country, intellectualism vs. street smarts, freedom vs. security.  With the move to Nashville, that dichotomy became literal, snaking its way through many of my songs as well as determining the album’s title and cover art.”

For The Man I Once Was, Eastham teamed up with producer (and former bandmate) Burke Ericson.  Ironically, he traveled back to Los Angeles to record this album using a group of incredibly talented musicians he’d met during his tenure there, including bassist Ted Russell Kamp and pedal steel player extraordinaire John McClung.

“Through the course of production, Burke ended up building a studio in his house which afforded us the opportunity to really hone the specific sound we wanted for this album,” says Eastham.  “We talked a lot about the early Neil Young records where he had big, funky drums over country-tinged songs.  Burke has such a great ear and I really trust him.   He understands me as a songwriter and always made my ideas better.”

Wolf & Cub Release NEW Album 'Heavy Weight'

Four years on from the release of their second album 'Science & Sorcery' Australia's psych rockers Wolf & Cub have a new line up, (Joel Byrne guitar and vocals and Joel Carey drums) Their third release 'Heavy Weight' vocalist Joel Byrne switchs up his vocal style, channelling early-80s era Mick Jagger and David Bowie circa Aladdin Sane. Singles 'Salao' and 'I Need More' show that the band is still adept at making rock music you can dance to; driven by heavy, chugging bass lines and adorned by classic psychedelia with subtle pop flourishes.

September rolls out, Revisit Feel Bad For You Mixtape 'Unsung Heroes'

As September rolls out and a new Feel Bad For You Mixtape approaches the first weekend of October,
Let's revisit the Unsung Heroes Mix. Those artists that never seemed to get the attention or acclaim they deserved. Download Read or leave Comments

1. Title: Who Could Ask For More
Artist: Gerald Collier
Album (2003): Breakin’ Down
Submitted By: @BoogieStudio22
Comments: Gerald Collier is a singer/songwriter I’ve submitted before, but in my mind, he epitomizes this month’s ‘unsung heroes’. He was a member of 90s alternative band Best Kissers In The World before going solo. He’s put out a bunch of albums from the mid-90s to about 2007, but ‘disappeared’ after his 2007 release. His albums plumbed the depths of addiction, lost love/friendships, etc… He’s back with a new album that is not nearly as dark sounding. While still exploring topics of addiction and loss, there’s a more hopeful side to his lyrics. He’s back in Seattle and starting to play around again.
2. Title: Hummingbird
Artist: Leon Russell
Album (1970): Leon Russell (1st Solo Album)
Submitted By: @popa2unes
Comments: oft overlooked
3. Title: Where the Fuckheads Roam
Artist: Big Fish Ensemble
Album (1994): I Hate Parties
Submitted By: @philnorman
Comments: Gawd, I loved this band. Their live show was incredible, chasing each other around stage with a trombone. Atlanta had an incredible music scene in the early 90s.
4. Title: New Boy
Artist: The Connells
Album (1994): New Boy EP
Submitted By: @mikeorren
Comments: The Connells were the hottest “power pop” band to come out of North Carolina in the 1990s. I first saw them play a party at somebody’s house in High Point in 1988. They were always supposed to become the “next big thing,” but never got there. Closest was this track which was huge in Europe, but not here. I remember how pissed I got when they finally played in Dallas, circa 1995, and their headliner slot got preempted by opener Cowboy Mouth who were cruising on their first (only?) hit. The Connells still gig occasionally in the Carolinas. http://www.theconnells.com/
5. Title: Wanna Be On Your Mind
Artist: Valerie June
Album (2013):
Submitted By: Bryan Childs (ninebullets.net)
Comments: I’ve been completely addicted to this song.
6. Title: Soundtrack To My Summer
Artist: Two Cow Garage
Album: Sweet Saint Me (2010)
Submitted by: hoosier buddy
Comments: I love this band, and wish they would come around more often, ’cause whenever I see them play it makes the voices stop for a while.
7. Title: Just Poppin’ Out To Fight A War
Artist: The Cropdusters
Album: If The Sober Go To Heaven…(1989)
Submitted By: Mad Mackerel Music Blog
Comments: If ever a band deserved more attention than they got, then it surely was The Cropdusters. A ferocious folk rock/cow punk band that put on the best live show we’ve ever seen and who, in the late 1980s were rising fast on the back of the success of the Pogues, the Men They Couldn’t Hang, New Model Army et al, they seemed destined for cult stardom at the very least. Somehow though it never quite happened: record deals fell through, major support slots were cancelled (too threatening to the headliners), drink and drugs and in-fighting took its toll, and instead second-rate copyists like the Levellers somehow became the next big thing. In the end the band left behind a hasty mini album of early singles and live recordings and a hard to find, but undeniably brilliant follow-up album (Home Grown Agent Orange) released on a Dutch label. This is the adrenalin fueled, mosh-pit meltdown of Just Poppin’ Out To Fight A War.
8. Title: Georgia Rain
Artist: The Questionnaires
Album: Anything Can Happen (1991)
Submitted By: toomuchcountry
Comments: With Jason And The Scorchers leading the way in the 80s, Music Row’s traditional sound was expanding in infinite directions. Many up-and-comers rotated through the clubs of Elliston Place and later expanded regionally, nationally and in some cases even into Europe. The Questionnaires was one such band. EMI signed the band, and two albums were released. Then Shawn Colvin recorded “Window To The World”, the opening song and title track of their first album, for her Cover Girl release. Full steam ahead to The Big Time. And then… *pffft*. Guitarist and lyricist Tom Littlefield has remained a Nashville songwriting presence in the 20+ years since The Questionnaires no longer had an answer. He co-wrote “I Couldn’t Care Less” with Tommy Womack for Womack’s fantastic “There I Said It!” album. And in 2012, he and another performer released “Treatment Bound”, a ukelele tribute to The Replacements (http://nashvillepublicradio.org/blog/2012/11/26/ukulele-bound-bright-little-field-strum-a-different-beat).
9. Title: Run Away West
Artist: Holidaysburg
Album:  A Better November
Submitted By: Romeo Sid Vicious
Comments: Holidaysburg is a band I discovered years back due to the Lucero message board via their drummer Larry Fulford. (Larry has also beat on things for Matt Woods and Truckstop Coffee and is a now a comedian.) I wish these guys had stuck around and done more than the one album because the song writing was damn good as was the music. It’s always sad to see bands disappear when they’re really good and Holidaysburg was no exception to that for me. Every time I pull out this record I am a little sad that it’ll be the only one by them I ever get to play.
10. Title: Mama’s Baby, Daddy’s Maybe
Artist: Swamp Dogg
Album (1970): Total Destruction to Your Mind
Submitted By: Trailer
Comments: One of my favorite soul artists ever. Probably didn’t get his due because he let his freak flag fly before flying your freak flag was cool.
11. Title: “Arousing Thunder”
Artist: Grant Lee Buffalo
Album (1996): Copperopolis
Submitted By: @TheSecondSingle
Comments: These guys had a good run in the ’90s mixing alt. rock with Americana, anchored by Grant Lee Phillips’ incredible voice. They even caught the admiration of Michael Stipe who had GLB open for R.E.M., talked them up in interviews and contributed to some of their recordings. Unfortunately, they never built a big enough audience to make it big and broke up before Y2K. They got back together for some London shows last year and released an astoundingly good live album from the Royal Festival Hall earlier this year (really; few bands from the ’90s could get back together after 15 years and sound this good). This track is one of my all time favorite songs and is just plain gorgeous.
12. Title: Hymn #101
Artist: Joe Pug
Album (2008): Hear Ya Live session
Submitted By: @tincanman2010
Comments: No one has had a sharper pen since Dylan than Joe Pug. When he writes, he bleeds. When he performs, he sweats. What he sings, he lives.
13. Title: Douchebags on Parade
Artist: Mudhoney
Album (2013): Vanishing Point
Submitted By: scratchedsoul
Comments: Mudhoney’s always been there and I get the sense they will continue to always be there. Through all the ups and downs of their scene, the industry, even their own band, they stay true to their garage rock roots while continuing to grow. As always, they do it all with a great sense of humor. I wouldn’t want to be on the other side of a Mark Arm barb.
14. Title: Sugar Blue Too
Artist: Jeff Finlin
Album (2004): Somewhere South of Wonder
Submitted By: Simon (www.beat-surrender.com)
Comments: Struggled with picking out an artist and song to submit this month before settling on a favourite from Jeff Finlin, I’ve all of Jeff’s albums and truth be told I’d recommended all of them to anyone who cares to listen.
15. Title: Lil Caney
Artist: Glossary
Album (2008): Better Angels of Our Nature
Submitted By: TheOtherBrit
Comments: I’ve seen these guys and gal in more cities and states than any other band. They’ve been going at it since the late 90s and are one of those bands who have paid their dues that you’d love to see hit it big. I’ve never seen them play a show where they didn’t give 100%.
16. Title: Mumblin’ Guitar
Artist: Bo Diddley
Album (Year): 1950s?
Submitted by: Gorrck
Comments: Always an underrated guitarist and performer, but without him, we wouldn’t have rock and roll as we know it.
17. Title: Golden
Artist: Radio Nationals
Album (2003): Place You Call Home
Submitted By: @BoogieStudio22
Comments: Radio Nationals were a Seattle-based band that put out an EP in 2002 and LP in 2003. This is kick ass alt-country at its best. They seemed to disappear shortly after their first national tour, when they were touring behind their LP release of Place You Call Home. Jared Clifton, who I think was the leader, still does solo shows around Seattle.

Debut EP From Rock Quintet Louis London - On Your Lips We Roared

BAND MEMBERS
Ed Saloman: Vocals/Guitar/Bass
Jack O’Donnell: Keyboards/Percussion
Nick Ingall: Guitar
Karl Fernandes: Bass/Vocals/Guitar
Jack Kiddell: Drums

Sprawling yet intimate, epic but warm, the young Aussies of Louis London are a study in dichotomy: a wildly eclectic and diverse set of influences coming together to create an entirely new sound. On their debut EP On Your Lips We Roared, the quintet of Louis London are comfortable staying in the indie rock/pop pocket, but flourishes of grand chamber bombast, ambient instrumental, and jazz color the corners.
“Our song formulas and concepts draw on all our different musical pasts, as well as the nature of contemporary popular music,” explains the band. “Chamber groups and orchestras, as well as more recent musical evolutions such as blues, jazz and of course rock and roll have influenced our tunes and concept of music.”

Having garnered a huge audience down under with sold out shows and Triple J airplay, Louis London now have their sights set on American shores. Having played music for the majority of their lives, the early twenty-somethings of Louis London found each other and immediately connected, with all sharing a strong work ethic and burning drive for success.
“We are all very active and engaged people,” explains Karl Fernandes (Bass/Vocals/Guitar). “From Australian and international politics to environmental issues and visual arts to sport. With five people in the band our interests range far and wide which helps keep the music fresh and creative.”
As for the album title, the band confesses that it’s about getting as close to the listener as possible, which might also serve as the band’s mission statement.
“It’s weirdly erotic I suppose,” admits Ed Saloman (Vocals/Guitar/Bass). Being so close to someone that you get that really proximal, intimate, intensity of emotion was what it was about for me, and something that I still want to recreate when we play live.”

LaVendore Rogue - What's the Meaning of...

JoJo Burgess & Joel Fisk the principle songwriters behind LaVendore Rogue first made a name for themselves in 2008 in the genre-defying, alt-blues-roots band Hokie Joint. Having made the bold decision to move on from their previous musical incarnation, the duo has reacquainted an award-winning chemistry with Stephen “Cupsey” Cutmore with whom they originally founded Hokie Joint.

With the addition of Rob ‘Tank’ Barry on Bass and Warren Lynn on Keys, LaVendore Rogue are looking to forge a new path that combines the influence of Americana and Country Music with the attitude of Punk and Rock n Roll.
Rough and tumble Americana with songs about luck n’ loss, life n’ death and with tales ripped straight out of the tabloids.
