Annie Lou - Grandma's Rules For Drinkin'

Another great release from Hearth Music, Annie Lou - Grandma's Rules For Drinkin' is an ole' timey floor board tappin' excursion to Appalachia by way of the Yukon. Excellent fiddlin' and strummin' and Annie's time warp vocalizations combined with great storytelling bring the past and present together in this outstanding album.

Grandma’s Rules for Drinking features the songwriting, singing, and guitar/banjo work of Anne Louise Genest, who spent twenty-two years in the Yukon woods. Recorded in Toronto, the album features the prodigious old-time fiddling of John Showman (New Country Rehab), the clawhammer banjo of Kim Barlow and Frank Evans, with Max Heineman (Foggy Hogtown Boys) on upright bass. The album was produced by multiple Juno-nominee Andrew Collins of Canadian alt-stringband The Creaking Tree String Quartet. Collins brought his extensive experience of pushing the boundaries of traditional music, plus some burning mandolin playing.

The Smoking Trees - Acetates

From it's entrancing opening aptly titled 'Entrance' we find ourselves transported back to the heyday of the Psychedelic scene waiting for Dr. Leary, Mr. Kesey and Owsley to make an entrance and lead us on our journey, but stepping into that place is the new Royalty of the scene Sir Psych and L.A. Al, The Smoking Trees
On the second song they implore us to 'See' Floating away...lost in the night breeze. You're going and you're gone. I'll see you in a song. And then 'Merry Go Maggie' sets the stage for the rest of the album's pilgrimage. Filled with heady lyrics, astral vocals, backed by multi instruments and groovy effects, this is a trip you'll want to take again and again.

Isle of Rhodes - All Rivers and Oceans

Brooklyn's Isle of Rhodes was founded in the spring of 2011 by front man and keyboardist Rob Farren. Farren, who had previously played keys with Aphonic (of Detroit), and synth bass with Kiss or Kill decided that he would like to strip his rig down to one keyboard: a Rhodes. An eclectic choice for an instrument, the Rhodes is a vintage keyboard with similar circuitry to an electric guitar.
Isle of Rhodes’ first studio length album “All Rivers and Oceans” was recorded with Grammy winning producer Jason Corsaro (Steve Winwood, Duran Duran, Motorhead, Madonna) and co-producer David Lloyd of Social Hero. Released by Machine Dream Records.

If you've ever put a conch shell to your ear and dreamed of warm sand between your toes, ocean breezes and piña colada's at your fingertips, put the shell down!. These 11 songs of grooviness with compelling melodies, sumptuous reverb, and hypnotic vocals are the cure for your doldrums.

Ruby The Hatchet New Album 'Ouroboros'

Ruby The Hatchet are: Jillian Taylor: Vocals, John Scarperia: Guitar, Mike Parise: Bass, Owen Stewart: Drums,Vocals

Listen -purchase name your own price and the money gets donated to hurricane sandy relief.
Jersey's primal psych/blues four piece outfit Ruby The Hatchet's long awaited debut album 'Ouroboro' drops 10/30/2012 on their Bandcamp page recorded and mixed primarily analog, using mostly equipment made before 1978. Back in July they Streamed it for a week, and if you caught it you are probably as excited as I am for this release. Long before Elin Larsson of Blues Pills was on the scene, Jillian Taylor was bringing raw, emotional belt it out bluesified vocals backed by heavy percussion and wailing riffs to those of us fortunate enough to live in the Tri-State area. Though there are hints of Grace Slick and Janis Joplin, her voice is unique and fresh and the band is tighter than a 55 gallon drum yet sound like they are just improvising in a garage in Haight Ashbury, the fact that the world doesn't know about them is a crying shame.

Jillian Taylor, a native of Asbury Park, NJ, filmed a short video about the band’s contribution for Rebuild Recover, which you can view below.

Dr. Dog Fall Sampler via NOISETRADE

After a one-album sojourn away from their band-built recording studio Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog returned home to Meth Beach to self-produce their latest collection of gloriously ramshackle rock ‘n’ roll reveries. Out February 7, Be The Void (Dr. Dog’s second release on Anti-Records) showcases the critically adored band’s renewed commitment to cultivating a stripped-down live sound. “This record comes from our pushing toward a rawer, more powerful, somewhat jittery competence,” explains guitarist-vocalist Scott McMicken. “We drew a lot of inspiration from soul music and the Rolling Stones and the Velvet Underground—music that’s got its roots in live expression rather than that studio-perfected sort of vibe.” While Be The Void bears the same style of scrappy yet hook-packed rock served up by Dr. Dog for more than a decade, the six-member outfit seems newly emboldened by its deepened devotion to a bare-bones aesthetic.

New Release form Bluejay - Mercury

The Bluejay band lineup is an organic beast that varies with location and availability of musicians. One constant collaborator is cellist and multi-instrumentalist Oscar Quesada.
Jay Thomas (acoustic guitar, vocals); Oscar Quesada (cello, synth/keys, percussion); Chris Wilkey (electric guitar, piano, percussion); Toni Lynn (electric bass, percussion); Jared Smith (drums); & Will Cole (drums).

Formed in Tallahassee in 2009, the city dubbed Bluejay “Soul-Pop”, referencing Jay's soulful voice, and a combination of pop, folk, and progressive song structures, with a mash-up of genre flavors including R&B, Reggae, and Alternative.

Two year Couch by Couchwest alumni Jay Thomas and his merry pranksters 'Bluejay' have just released their sophomore album. Mercury explores a musical string theory, the instrument's occupy a multi-dimensional space each it's own, weaved together and anchored securely by the gravitational pull of Jay's vocals and lyrical authenticity and kinetic energy, adding the extra dimensions required for it all to exist in a cohesive form. From the soulful lamentations of Burnin' Soul to the catchy 2 For 1, this is a beautifully crafted album.

Produced by Chris Wilkey, Oscar Quesada, Jay Thomas

New Release: Jim From The Moon "Space, Flesh & Woe"

Jim - Guitars/Vocals/Glockenspiel - Jeff Boyd - Drums

Following up on his 2011 acoustic EP "I Am Going to Steal You," Jim's unique take on the old Irish "Sean-nos" singing, strummed and plucked to a warm acoustic guitar, Jim from the Moon teamed up with Jeff Boyd on drums and plugged it in! With his distinct vocals and willingness to explore and push conventional genres with his own unique take, this album stretches the boundaries of psych/rock. This is the 26 year old world traveler's ninth album, he is a young man with an old soul and tales to tell.

"Space, Flesh & Woe" explores areas of psychedelia, rock, and pop. Themes prevalent on the album are taken from the last year of his life; living on a boat, expanding his mind, and falling in and out of love.

The second track 'Open Sore' is available as a free download on soundcloud.

At times Jim from the Moon plays acoustic tunes about girls, the devil, and similar distractions. They flow in the vein of Loudon Wainwright III and Neil Young, sung with a voice soaked in years of Irish storytelling. Other times he expels far-out electric rock that is primal and space-ward, with hints of Hendrix's blues. Both sides are focused, catchy, and ready to be eaten by your ears.

BREAKING: New Kasey Anderson and The Honkies 24 Hour Window!

New Kasey Anderson and The Honkies album available exclusively for 72 hours between October 20-22.
Per his website:

I’m going to be honest with you. Offering this pre-order and limited edition pressing hurts my chances in terms of a label putting out this record but, guess what? I’ve put out records myself before, and whether it’s this one or another, I bet I’ll do it again. In fact, this record was slated to be released by a label Spring 2013 but a last-minute argument over a few details resulted in the disappearance of that deal. This is not the first time I’ve argued myself out of a record deal and I’ll be honest, the last two times that happened – in 2004 with Dead Roses and in 2010 with Nowhere Nights – I came out better for it. I’m not sure if this will be the case here, but I certainly am tired of trusting other people to care as much about my records and my fans as I do. So, maybe a label will release Let the Bloody Moon Rise in 2013 or maybe I’ll do it myself. Either way, it’s coming out.
Until then, I’ve had enough people ask about the record that I wanted to make it available. So, here you have it: the finished, resequenced, and remastered Let the Bloody Moon Rise, on CD and 180 gram vinyl. All physical orders will ship November 20 but, in the meantime, you get an immediate digital download of the full album plus several bonus tracks. There are also a couple of extra packages where you can get a t-shirt with your order, and one where you can get my little Gretsch Way Out West guitar, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Now, if you contributed to the non-Kickstarter, or the earlier pre-order of album, which we had to pull (see aforementioned label arguments), your CD and LP will ship November 20, as well, and you’ll also receive an email with a download code for this new, ten-song version of the record and bonus tracks (some of which you have, some you don’t).
The earlier fourteen-song version of Let the Bloody Moon Rise will never exist again, so if you got that, good for you. But this is the record. This is the statement I wanted to make – we wanted to make – going forward. This pre-order will be active until 11:59 PM Monday, October 22, and then it’s gone for good. I want y’all to hear the record but, as I said, doing this jeopardizes the small remaining chance I have that someone else will put this record out. And while I am certainly prepared to release the record myself, it’s maybe not a good idea to burn every bridge I’ve got left. Not just yet, anyway.
Alright, I hope you dig the record. The Honkies are done for 2012, but we’ll be back next year to tour behind this record, which I am very, very proud of.

Porch Stompin' with Foghorn Stringband

Grab a jug of yer favorite XXX, put on yer stompin' shoes and set on the porch for this one with yer friends.

Hearth Music brings you 21 songs from the venerated American old-time ensemble Foghorn Stringband. They've been leading a new roots music revival out of their homebase of Portland, Oregon for over a decade now. With their new album,(Get it here) Outshine the Sun, Foghorn Stringband has added a new member to the lineup–Bellingham country singer Reeb Willms–and they're continuing to explore not only Southern old-time music, but also vintage country and even Cajun music.

To produce Outshine the Sun, Foghorn Stringband went back to the source of their music, gathering around a single microphone and a roaring wood stove in Caleb’s Portland, Oregon home. The rainy winter nights pulled them even closer, and if the music sounds both wildly virtuosic and intimately hand-crafted, that’s the kind of paradox on which Foghorn thrives. The songs and tunes on Outshine the Sun come from rare and wonderful sources like old-time masters John Ashby, Dwight Lamb, and The Stripling Brothers, but also from well- known sources like The Carter Family, Charlie Poole, The Stanley Brothers, and Hazel Dickens. Outshine the Sun is a glorious explosion of stringband music, with members trading instruments as quickly as harmony lines. Caleb Klauder is known for his rapid-fire mandolin picking, but is also featured here on fiddle. Sammy Lind is an amazing fiddler, but brings some deft banjo picking to the album, and all four members trade off singing leads and swapping harmonies. Over all, there’s a rough-and-rowdy, hell-for-leather attitude to the album, the same spirit that made Foghorn Stringband an inspiration for multiple generations.

Feel Bad for You October - Guilty Pleasures Edition

This month your favorite bloggers, twitters, and other jokesters present 50 Shades of Feel Bad for You: Guilty Pleasures Edition where in they share innermost secrets usually reserved for a couch session with their psychiatrist. What's going round and round in their heads? Prepare to be amazed or disillusioned. Thanks to @philnorman for the killer cover art. get it here.

1. Title: Killer Whale
Artist: Underground Resistance
Album (year): 1992
Submitted By: Slowcoustic
Comments: I don’t want to say this is a “guilty pleasure” as much as it is a genre that most folks are surprised that I really really love (once and awhile). Early Detroit Techno. The “techno” today tends to be a bit too shiny for me and I am just too far removed from any sort of scene now to get the good stuff I guess. So, like every other aging dude who used to like metal or techno while growing up – I will always enjoy the classics as a guilty pleasure. I am pretty sure I owned the white label vinyl for this track back in the day – sold from a DJ from the trunk of his car…obviously…

2. Title: Planet Earth
Artist: Duran Duran
Album: Greatest Hits (1998)
Submitted by: Simon
Comments: Time to confess I guess, I’m a bit of music snob, sometimes I may voice an opinion on my good ladies choice of music, most times my comments are frowned upon or brushed off with more than a little disdain, in truth I’m lucky I don’t get a punch in the nose for my generally scurrilous commentary, in my defense I am often tortured by Absolute 80′s on the radio and Now That’s What I Call Music Volumes 1 to 6 on the stereo, so my choice is a real guilty pleasure – hopefully I’ll get away with it….

3. Title: Here For The Party
Artist: Gretchen Wilson
Album: Here For The Party (2004)
Submitted By: BoogieStudio22
Comments: Shut up! I told you it was a guilty pleasure.

4. Title: I’m Raving
Artist: Scooter
Album: Wicked! (1996)
Submitted By: tincanman
Comments: I know this is a sacrilege, so no need to rub my nose in it  . Scooter’s fast tempos and happy melodies are infectious and this is one of their signature covers. You just gotta get over being a big ole stick in the mud to enjoy it.

5. Title: Que Veux-Tu
Artist: Yelle
Album: 2011
Submitted By: @scratchedsoul
Comments: I have no idea what this song is about as my French isn’t that strong. I just hope they’re not singing about fascist topics. Listening to dance/pop songs in a foreign language is much easier because you don’t have the insipidness of the lyrics distracting you from the catchiness of the song.

6. Title: The Background
Artist: Third Eye Blind
Album: Third Eye Blind (1997)
Submitted By: Trailer
Comments: This whole album is a guilty pleasure for me, full of ridiculously catchy pop-alt-rock, but it’s this tearjerker about a hospital-bound ex-lover that always gets me.

7. Title: Greatest Night
Artist: Vulture Whale
Album: Bamboo You (2010)
Submitted By: TheOtherBrit
Comments: I don’t usually condone singing with a fake British accent, but this Vulture Whale album is awesome.

8. Title: Extraordinary
Artist: Liz Phair
Album: Liz Phair (2003)
Submitted By: hoosier buddy
Comments: I’m a process guy, so I started with a list of about twenty “possible” artists, then chose three representative songs from each artist to review. I rejected Lily Allen (too obvious), Delerium (pointless), and ¡Bowling for Soup! before landing on this rough gem from Liz Phair. I am a Phair fan, and I respect her songwriting abilities. She’s made some important contributions to pop music, including Exile in Guyville. But I digress…

“Extraordinary” was manufactured to be like the girl all the bad guys want. But even made up like a teen beauty pageant contestant by über-pop producers The Matrix, this pop-rocket failed in its mission to penetrate the chart stratosphere. It landed with a critical thud. But, as a guilty pleasure, it delivers in spades on both counts. Listen to that industrial-strength garbage can guitar tone, the Johnny-Barbata-drum-school dropout drumming, the Nutrasweet-cum-Chipmunks backing vocals, and you know this is the one you want to take home from the dance. Phair sings these cringe-worthy lyrics lustily, and you can hear the self-image crisis (average every day sane psycho supergoddess) within the this-is-almost-a-relationship crisis within the what-are-the-chances-of-getting-radio-airplay crisis – the Russian dolls of pop angst! This is what a plaisir coupable should be: more pleasure than guilt.

9. Title: Joyride
Artist: Roxette
Album: Joyride (1991)
Submitted By: Ryan (Verbow @ altcountrytab.ca)
Comments: When I think guilty pleasures, I think of bands/songs that you would be completely horrified to have your friends find out about. What better guilty pleasure, then, than an early 90′s crap pop song from a Swedish crap pop powerhouse? Ladies and gentleman – “Joyride” by Roxette. I want to hate myself for liking this song, but I can’t. I will sing it at the top of my lungs any time I hear it, unless I happen to be within 100 feet of another actual human being who may hear me and judge me for my forbidden love. I’m so sorry for this.

10. Title: Toxic
Artist: Nickel Creek (covering Britney Spears)
Album: live (2005?)
Submitted By: April @ Now This Sound Is Brave
Comments: This tune is such a guilty pleasure for me that I can’t even bring myself to submit the original, so I’m hoping to preserve a modicum of respect with this Nickel Creek cover, serendipitously recorded at the House of Blues (blech) in Cleveland (yay). I’ve never been fond of Spears’ work, but the unique instrumentation and the abjectly sexual vibe of this song hit me in an irresistible spot.

11. Title: I Believe In a Thing Called Love
Artist: The Darkness
Album: Permission to Land (2003)
Submitted By: @philnorman
Comments: I love the complete campy perfection of this song, from the falsetto hook to the hair band homage video complete with Ghostbusters photon streams shooting from the guitars. My life as the singer in a party cover band will be complete when we do this song.

12. Title: Shakin’
Artist: Eddie Money
Album: the 80′s
Submitted By: Truersound
Comments: I really struggled with this submission, normally my go to for “guilty pleasure” is Alabama, but those guys are like classic country now I suppose. There were others I considered but did not really feel guilty about enjoying (such as The Eagles), many nostalgia and irony laced acts and then there were many that I enjoy when I hear them on the radio or in a store (such as I Saw The Sign or You Belong To Me) but I don’t actively seek out to listen to. That led me to this, of which I have an Eddie Money greatest hits tape in the car and I genuinely dig. I only feel partially guilty though, and that’s only because I also once enjoyed a scene on King Of Queens featuring this song. For the record Eddie Money’s best song is “Gimme Some Water,” but I have zero guilt about that one.

13. Title: Hit the Switch
Artist: Bright Eyes
Album: Digital Ash in a Digital Urn
Submitted By: Rockstar Aimz
Comments: I am completely embarrassed to admit that I like Bright Eyes. Go ahead. Judge. I can take it.

14. Title: Dirty Song
Artist: Cars Can Be Blue
Album: All The Stuff We Do (2005)
Submitted By: annieTUFF
Comments: This was a hard decision for me! Uh, don’t listen to this song with any kids around.

15. Title: Hand Me The Crown
Artist: The Dirty Urchins
Album (2011): Just In Time
Submitted By: @popa2unes
Comments: I love Sax, Lady singers and whiskey, all three are combined here.

16. Title: Second Chance
Artist: .38 Special
Album (1988): Rock & Roll Strategy
Submitted by: TheSecondSingle/Beldo
Comments: This was tough for me. There were a lot of songs I considered: “Love In The First Degree” by Alabama, “No One Is To Blame” by Howard Jones, “Live To Tell” by Madonna. Anyone who knows me even a little bit knows I have a soft spot for guilty pleasures. Sometimes the guilty pleasures override the respectable pleasures, but I digress….38 Special released what is easily one of the wussiest monster ballads of the ’80s and definitely the wussiest song by a band named after a gun, but you know what? I don’t care. Cause this song rules. It has kick ass harmonies and a killer chorus. It also sounds nothing like the shit kickers who recorded “Caught Up In You.” It sounds like Richard Marx.

Atom and the Volumes Debut EP

Marc Borins - Guitar/Vocals
Bradley Snider - Guitar/Keys/Drums/Vocals
Michael Grundy - Percussion/Drums/Bass/Guitar
Gabe Kugelmass - Bass/Guitar/Vocals

Like a brisk Canadian wind, Toronto based Atom and the Volumes offer something crisp and fresh with their debut EP. With smooth mastery they blend a mix of indie rock and inventive psychedelic riffs full of catchy hooks. One problem, it's over to damn soon!

Earlier this week they stopped by Syncopated Sound Toronto headquarters to talk about their upcoming Indie Week events, their sound, and performed their latest track “Cold Steel” live on our balcony overlooking the city.

Beautiful Sunrise - Tipi Valley

Coming quick on the heels of his June debut LP release  'In The Woods' UK singer/songwriter Ed Toft AKA Tipi Valley drops an Ep of fuzzy psych flavored 60's groovyness 'Beautiful Sunrise'
Starting with 'Light Up My Life' and it's raw lo-fi sliding geetar riffs and resonating vocals, you are transported to the heyday of garage music.
'Needle For Your Love' blasts off like a Rock and Roll anthem with it's steady beat, rambunctious riffs and sing-along chorus.
'When I'm Stoned' with it's Neil Youngish guitar work, stage jam feel and laid back and toke vocals is definitely my favorite on the EP.
Closing it out is 'Worn Out Lies' with a Richie Havens paced acoustic guitar strum and hypnotic vocals.

And again a shout out to Joe Wolfe-Mazeres over at Ear to the Ground  for bringing Tipi Valley to my attention.

Free: Alive at the Deep Blues Fest Buffalo Killers song 'It's A Shame'

Alive at the Deep Blues Fest will be released November 27th through Alive Naturalsound Records in the following formats: CD, Digital and Black Vinyl with mp3 download card & poster, as well as Limited Edition "BBQ SAUCE RED" Colored Vinyl exclusive to the Bomp mail-order.

The 2012 Deep Blues Fest featured 26 bands from four countries & 16 states. Out of these acts there were seven phenomenal performances from the current Alive roster. Alive At The Deep Blues Fest is the document of these incendiary and unforgettable performances. All 13 tracks were mixed by famed Detroit producer/musician Jim Diamond, who managed to capture the loose and spontaneous feel of live albums produced in the Golden Age of rock'n'roll. Buffalo Killers and Radio Moscow turned in super heavy sets soaked in psychedelia and reverb, while Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires fiercely ripped through their show with a blistering set of songs steeped in Southern rock, R&B, soul, gospel and punk from their critically acclaimed debut LP There Is A Bomb In Gilead - an album that has been helping to define the sounds of The New South. Brian Olive and his backing band melded soulful R&B with technicolor garage-pop for their early daytime set, while the Welsh duo Henry's Funeral Shoe, Left Lane Cruiser and newcomers John The Conqueror perhaps kept closest to the Deep Blues curriculum with their respectively raunchy and heavily amplified modern interpretations of rural gutbucket Delta Blues.

Neptune's Car - Letters From The Road

Neptune’s Car is a duo made up of New Hampshire guitarist/songwriter Steve Hayes and singer/songwriter Holly Hanson  from Massachusetts, together they blend a sweet sound of folk and alt-country rich in story-telling.
They have a shared passion for Lighthouse's and and historical biographies, Neptune’s Car was a clipper ship with a female captain — a true adventure of heroism on the high seas in the 1800's.

Letters from the Road is their second album, a twelve-song album of original songs.
In April 2012, Hanson and Hayes traveled to Hendersonville, Tennessee, to record with Morgan Jahnig (Old Crow Medicine Show). Jahnig plays upright bass on all twelve songs, as well as recorded, mixed, mastered, and co-produced Letters from the Road.
released 18 July 2012 Available on iTunes and CDBaby

The debut album, Strawberry Moon, reached #4 on the FOLK-DJ chart and included the #1 song “Lighthouse Keeper.” The album was also featured on several “Best of” lists:

Hanson lived the life of a lighthouse keeper as she and her two sons cared for the Rose Island Lighthouse in Newport, Rhode Island. The music video for “Lighthouse Keeper” was shot on location at the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse and Great Island Common in New Castle, New Hampshire. Lighthouse historian, author, preservationist, tour guide, photographer, and president of the American Lighthouse Foundation Jeremy D’Entremont directed, filmed, and edited the music video.
