Eight Dollar Mountain - "Tied To The Tracks" - Produced by Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon

Rising from the Cascade-Siskiyou Mountain range of Southern Oregon comes Eight Dollar Mountain, an exciting, high-energy bluegrass quintet. The group effortlessly blends whitewater-fast rhythms, tasteful harmony arrangements and plenty of low-end thump for a live performance that is sure to get crowds dancing and hollering for more. Eight Dollar Mountain serves up neo-traditional bluegrass blended with rootsy old-time country, blues, and gospel harmonies. Their hard-driving rhythms will pull you onto the dance floor while their clear, purposeful sound reflects the finest traditions of mountain music.

Formed four short years ago on a foggy mountaintop at a bluegrass jam outside of Ashland Oregon, the guys discovered they each shared a similar passion for bluegrass, newgrass and old-timey music. After pickin’ on a few standards, the group’s formation seemed only natural. The blinding-fast flatpicking of Darren Campbell (guitar, vocals), the driving rhythms of Stuart Green (banjo, vocals), the monstrous chop and Monroe-like tones of Phil Johnson (mandolin, vocals), the pulsing low-end of Peter Koelsch (bass, vocals), and the haunting bluesy riffs of Mark Lackey (resonator-guitar, vocals) form the cornerstone of Eight Dollar Mountain’s distinctive sound.

Tied To The Tracks is the band’s third release and is produced by Vince Herman, the incomparable lead man of the progressive “Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass” band Leftover Salmon. Herman, a recent transplant to Oregon from his longtime home amongst the prolific Rocky Mountain bluegrass scene, lends his energy, creative style, and finely tuned ear to the production helm. Recorded at The Studio at Pacifica in Williams, Oregon (the old Steve Miller Ranch built in the 1970s) Tied To The Tracks was recorded, mixed, and mastered by multi-faceted videographer, drummer and Grammy award winning producer/engineer Dennis Dragon (Captain and Tennille, Johnny Rivers, Carole King).

Tied To The Tracks features nine originals and three covers. The album starts off briskly with “These Old Blues”, a song penned by bluegrass legend Larry Sparks, before weaving its way into the easy going licks of “Big Time (Country Dave)” written by fellow Oregon band, Jackstraw. The lonesome and timeless Bluegrass croon of “The Old High Way” and the title song “Tied To The Tracks” both have enough vintage flair, vivid presentation and emotional momentum to be more than your average songs about roads, trains and heartbreak. The instrumental tunes “Old 77” and “Ambush” showcase the energetic picking and impressive instrumentation of the band. Recording in a studio built by the legendary Steve Miller inspired the band to cover Miller’s tune “Fly Like An Eagle”, co-produced by Grammy winning Dennis Dragon, and including a guest banjo track from Leftover Salmon’s Andy Thorn. In the band’s own words, the song is like “Bluegrass tradition hitching a ride on a 70s acid rock school bus.”

Eight Dollar Mountain’s warm sound, authentic storytelling and homage to traditional roots music prompted hometown Jefferson Public Radio music director Eric Teel to remark; "These guys have honed their craft through constant gigging and wide open ears that obviously absorb the best of what old-time, bluegrass and folk music has to offer."

The Howlin’ Brothers NEW Album Trouble

The Howlin’ Brothers follow up to the exceptional and well received Howl, is another fantastic release, Troubles have never felt so good to have. And it appears they’ll have no trouble finding greater success in the near future.

Trouble was produced and engineered by indie rocker Brendan Benson of The Raconteurs and solo career fame. It was released on CD and digitally April 29th via Benson’s independent label Readymade Records (in the U.S.), and distributed by Thirty Tigers/RED. In Canada, it is released via Dine Alone Records, and distributed by Universal.
Benson describes Trouble as “effortless artistry . . . woebegone, lovelorn and wrought with pain, but not without installments of lightheartedness and beauty, downtrodden and then uplifted.” He adds, “The Howlin’ Brothers are somehow able to conjure images of a bygone era and make it believable. Trouble is all over the map and I don’t just mean figuratively. The listener gets a glimpse into the troubadour lifestyle, traveling (among other places) to Louisiana for a Cajun romp on the bayou and across the Arizona desert to California on a search for a misses. It’s a journey very much worth the while. Hoooowwwwllll!”
Benson continues: “The Howlin’ Brothers live the life they sing about in their songs. They are authentic and the real deal through and through.  On top of that, they are the hardest working musicians I've come across.  They play their instruments every waking moment and are truly possessed by music.”
According to Green, “The songs on Trouble are very different from one another. It’s a collection of beautiful music influenced from personal experience. We tend to write songs separately and collaborate after a melody or lyrics are fully thought. Trouble is a gumbo of stories that we hope the whole world will hear. It was a blast working with Brendan Benson again, getting as far out sonically as we could dream of, all in the midst of having a brand new baby and coming right off the road from a busy year. A time of my life I will never forget.”

Listen to three songs off the album

The majority of the 13 original songs that comprise Trouble, were influenced by the people they met and struggles they encountered on the road over the past year.
Trouble’s songs touch on lots of experiences from each side of the same coin in the band’s life. Though these guys have more depth and dimension than just two sides as people, players, and songwriters. Their individual strengths combine in the bands’ whole in ways that really do solidify their bond as musical brothers. They all met in college up in Ithaca, N.Y. and migrated to Nashville, Tenn. Afterwards, where they immersed themselves further in the Southern music they love and began to further hone their craft.  Prior to HOWL (2013), they self-released four albums - Tragic Mountain Songs (2007), Long Hard Year (2009), Baker St. Blues (2011), and a very limited edition compilation of live performances, Old Time All the Time (2012). These previous releases had been sold exclusively at shows, however they may become available on the band’s website sometime in 2014.

Release Day Elephant Stone NEW Album The Three Poisons

Photo Credit Bowen Stead & Daniel Barkley
ELEPHANT STONE is: RISHI DHIR: vocals, bass, sitar | MILES DUPIRE: drums, backing vox |GABRIEL LAMBERT: geetars, backing vox

Elephant Stone new album released Three Poisons today (August 25) Purchase on Website iTunes
Montreal’s Elephant Stone was formed in 2009 by sitarist/bassist Rishi Dhir. As one of the most highly sought out sitar players in the international psych scene, he has recorded, performed and toured with Beck, the Black Angels, Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Horrors, and many more.
Elephant Stone’s third full-length, The Three Poisons. Their strongest/grooviest release to date, Elephant Stone will support the release by touring the world and spreading their psychedelified Hindie- Rock mantra.
Stream The Three Poisons entire album here
They have spear-headed the Hindie-Rock movement with their deft ability of weaving together rock’n’roll, Hindustani classical, and catchy-as-all-hell pop.
Main man Rishi Dir tells how an abandoned box of vinyl -- full of treasures --informed the making of the new album:
What I found in that box was beyond anything I could have imagined. Yes, there was Echo's "Songs to Learn & Sing", but there was also a 12" single release of the Happy Mondays "Step On" and "Kinky Afro", Spaceman 3 "Recurring", The Stone Roses "Waterfall" and "One Love", New Order's house masterpiece "Technique", Ride's "Today Forever", and the list went on. I was dumbfounded as to why someone would abandon such treasure. Were they starting off the New Year by purging themselves of their material possessions? Payback from a wounded lover? Divine intervention? Whatever it was, I lucked out and began reacquainting myself with Shaun, Rowetta, J Spaceman, Sonic Boom, Ian, Bernard, Hooky, et al.

Fast forward a year later and the band is in deep, working on the follow-up to the self-titled 2013 release.
I don't think it was just me, but things felt different this time around. The grooves were groovier, the sonics rumbled heavier, and the songs were connecting to something bigger.
It wasn't until Malika Tirolien came in to record her inspired backing vocals for "Knock You From Yr Mountain" and "All Is Burning" that I reflected on that abandoned record collection I inherited and the trip it took me on. In that moment I heard the groove of the Mondays, the darkness of Echo, the jangle of Ride... but what I truly heard and felt coming together in these new batch of songs was--and is--unequivocally the sound of Elephant Stone.

Faces On Film NEW Album Elite Lines

Mike Fiore aka Faces On Film new album ‘Elite Lines’ is full of breadth and depth, notes float and languish in the air creating imagery and casting spells, ethereally moody and expansive. Hypnotic drums and enthralling vocals ‘Elite Lines’ is an album that will take you to beautiful places.
Fiore says that, “each song on the record came together in the same way, more or less. All the parts would be there, in my head, but I wouldn’t practice them or try to assemble anything before it was time to record. That joy of playing something for the first time is what I wanted to get on tape.” That ultimately speaks to that state of intimacy where you’re hearing someone play out a secret in song.

Title: Next to the Trash
Artist: Punch Brothers
Album  (2010): Antifogmatic
Submitted By: @philnorman
Comments: It’s all part of having a man in the house

Title: Where Is My Knife
Artist: The Amazing Snakeheads
Album: Amphetamine Ballads (2014)
Submitted By: Mad Mackerel Music Blog
Comments: Undoubtedly our live discovery of the year at the Great Escape Festival. Menacing, brooding, savage, threatening, and quite, quite brilliant. Junkyard punk and voodoo blues combine to create a sleazy, hypnotic masterpiece on this, one of many standouts on their debut album.

Title: She’s Got A Heart Of Stone
Artist: The Singles
Album (4/9/2014): Daytrotter Studio Session
Submitted By: @BoogieStudio22
Comments: As I’ve mentioned a time or two or a hundred, I’m a sucker for power pop. I came across The Singles on a recent Daytrotter (Daytrotter.com) session and they blew me away. I hear the best of the 60s pop and garage bands, as well as power pop from the 80s (Romantics, Smithereens, etc…).

Title: Too Shiny
Artist: Zoe Muth
Album (2014) World of Strangers
Submitted by: Simon www.beat-surrender.com
Comments: Loving the new Zoe Muth album at the moment and this is one of the many highlights from it

Title: Two Ambulance Day
Artist: The Wind-Up Birds
Album [2014]: Poor Music
Submitted By: hoosier buddy (with thanks to April for introducing this band to me)
Comments: Poor Music by The Wind-Up Birds (released on Sturdy Records 27 May 2014) is a terrible, heartbreaking, immediate, loose-tense, connect-the-dots-and-see-where-you’ve-got-to-now album. It will push you to drink, then give you cause to despair, then inspire you to anger that extends in all directions and feeds on throbbing bass and desperate drumming. I’m not suicidal; just enlightened in a way I totally did not expect. Picking just one song was an exercise in futility, as there is no filler in the 17 tracks on this CD. In the end I had to choose, and Two Ambulance Day offered itself as a harbinger of what will be. Watch out!
From the blog Life Is One Big Review:
“‘Two Ambulance Day’ is another dose of brilliant post-punk sarcasm. Lead singer Paul Ackroyd’s vocals are impassioned, as always. Ambience gives way to a high energy finish and the track overall leaves you with the overwhelming feeling that the country is going to shit.”

Artist: Matt Woods
Song: Liberty Bell
Album: With Love From Brushy Mountain
Label: Lonely Ones Records
Year: 2014
Submitted By: Adam Dawson: www.TheBrokenJukebox.com
Comments: My submission this month comes from the new Matt Woods record that I can’t stop listening to. Every year there are a few records that really rise above even the great records of that year and With Love From Brushy Mountain is definitely one this year. I chose “Liberty Bell” really because it’s the last track on the album and the last one I listened to today, therefore the lines “My bloodshot eyes can hide about behind these shades and a couple of drinks” are stuck in my head. I could have just as easily sent in any song from the record and been happy with my submission for the month.

Artist: Bobby Charles
Song: Street People
Album: Bobby Charles (1972)
Submitted By: Truersound
Comments: Friend played this LP for me recently. Features the Band, dr. John, others, produced by Robbie Robertson. Laid back Louisiana swamp funk. Reissued recently from > http://lightintheattic.net/releases/1009-bobby-charles

Title: Fire Eyes
Artist: The Entrance Band
Album (2013): Face The Sun
Submitted By: Popa Tunes
Comments: A good friend Mike Newman, former DJ at the defunct East Village Radio started his own label Beyond, Beyond is Beyond last year, with an ear for groovy psych music he is gathering a plethora of tasty bands to the label. If you’re heavy into such music he has a yearly jamscription service that mails every new release on VINYL to your door. There is a free 2014 bandcamp sampler available to indulge in.

Title: My Silver Lining
Artist: First Aid Kit
Album (2014): Stay Gold
Submitted By: Bryan Childs (ninebullets.net)
Comments: Currently, my favorite song of the year.

Title: Turn The Lights Down Low
Artist: Sarah McLachlan
Album:Shine On (2014)
Submitted By: @tincanman2010
Comments: Don’t worry girls, I haven’t gone soft on you. ooo, er. I don’t usually listen to Sarah, but her latest – about emerging from a period of loss – is tremendous despite the typically tepid Canadian studio work. (One song, Broken Heart, would be an all-time country classic if redone right)

Title: Chicken Hearted
Artist: Roy Orbison
Album: The Early Years comp (but released as a single on Sun Records in 1957)
Submitted By: annieTUFF
Comments: Who doesn’t like Roy Orbison? This is one of my favorite summertime tunes. (It is also very possible that I was inspired to choose this song by my current hunt for new sunglasses)

Title: Memphis In The Meantime
Artist: John Hiatt
Album  (1994): Hiatt Comes Alive At Budokan?
Submitted By: toomuchcountry
Comments: I was thrilled along with a few thousand others to see John Hiatt live on a recent Saturday night in the big field of an historic horse farm owned by the city of Franklin, TN. A day later it dawned on me it was the second time for me to see Hiatt – with both times in city parks. The first time was in Chattanooga’s Miller Plaza about 25 years ago when only about 300 folks or so attended. I had the opportunity way back then to meet him after the show, and he autographed my copy of Slow Turning. The dude still gets it done.

Title: The Promise
Artist: When in Rome
Album (1988): When in Rome
Submitted By: Rockstar Aimz
Comments: This one is for those of you too young to remember the original and are now enjoying Sturgill Simpson’s cover. This was one of my favorite songs in high school. Sometimes I miss the 80s. Sigh.

Title: No Roads Here
Artist: Corb Lund
Album  (2014): Counterfeit Blues
Submitted By: Rockstar Aimz
Comments: My third favorite music act (the first being The Sadies and the second being Neil Young) is releasing a live album on July 1. Most of the songs from this album are from his first two albums (2002′s Five Dollar Bill and 2006′s Hair in My Eyes Like a Highland Steer) which are both, sadly, largely unknown to the American audience. There are two or three new tracks on the album too, and this is one of them.

Title: Happy
Artist: John Fullbright
Album (2014): Songs
Submitted By: Rockstar Aimz
Comments: You want sad country songs? I’ll give you sad country songs. This album is brilliant.

Title: The Company Song
Artist: Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires
Album (2014): Dereconstructed
Submitted By: Rockstar Aimz
Comments: This may be my album of the year. It’s hands down the rock album of the year. If you can imagine a Southern rock arrow starting from Skynyrd and pointing to the Drive-By Truckers, this arrow now points from the DBT to Lee Bains III, but with a dash of punk on the side. Listen closely to the lyrics. Brilliant.

Title: Anchor Iron
Artist: Fire Mountain
Album: All Dies Down (2014)

Unicycle Loves You
The Dead Age - out June 10 via Highwheel Records/Mecca Lecca

Unicycle Loves You recently announced the details for their fourth album The Dead Age, which will be coming out June 10 via Highwheel Records/Mecca Lecca. Over the course of their first three records, Unicycle Loves You have transformed from a jangly power pop quintet to a post-new wave quartet (Mirror, Mirror), to a garage-psych trio (Failure), into the fourth chapter in the evolution of the band: The Dead Age. Crafted meticulously, often pushing the tonal limits through a massive wall of sound, melodies explode into chaotic free-falls, where screaming guitars and mammoth-sized bass bend at the will of ULY, simultaneously paying homage to Mascis and Beefheart.
Here are links to check it out via Spotify and iTunes too, and you can order vinyl copies directly from the band through their bandcamp as well

Band of Horses Summer Tour Dates

Band of Horses captured a special live acoustic performance of their songs "No One's Gonna Love You" and "Heartbreak on the 101" at the historic Hollywood sign. Enabled by Visit California, as part of the Dream365 Project & California DreamGigs.

The Local Strangers are heading into the studio...

The Local Strangers are heading into the studio with Producer/Engineer Martin Feveyear at the Jupiter Studios in Seattle to work on a new album to be relaesd later this year. Martin has over 20 years experience making great records and has recently worked with - Brandi Carlile, Hey Marseilles, Kris Orlowski, Campfire OK, Zoe Muth, and many others. In exchange for your email addy you can get a seven song sampler for free.

Whether in a vast theater or an intimate living room, The Local Strangers captivate audiences with their powerful voices, compelling lyrics, and engaging presence.  Over 8,000 miles of independent touring over the last year has seasoned Aubrey Zoli and Matt Hart, both as an acoustic duo and fronting their raucous 5-piece band.  In each performance, The Local Strangers’ honest and soulful songs evoke a wide spectrum of emotions spanning from irrepressible joy to wistful introspection.  Their first full length album Left for Better, produced with Kevin Matley (The Head and the Heart, Bryan John Appleby), showcases that dynamic range.
After each departing long term musical projects, Midwest-to-Seattle transplants Aubrey and Matt met in September 2010 and quickly realized that they shared a common musical vision. Within one month, The Local Strangers played a debut show and entered the studio to record their first EP.  Emboldened by Seattle’s supportive music community and a sold-out EP release show, they hit the road to reach a national audience at venues such as The Hotel Cafe (LA), The Casbah (San Diego), Schubas Tavern (Chicago), and Pete’s Candy Store (Brooklyn).  Demand for a full length album grew, and a successful Kickstarter campaign with over 200 backers helped make Left for Better a reality.
The Local Strangers full band shows feature Justin Howard on drums, Mike DeBenedictis on electric guitar and banjo, and Ethan Sobotta on bass.
