Franky Silence & Ghost Orchestra - NEW EP Fallen

Sabrina Troxler - vox, co-writing
Pablo Haller - lyrics
Adi Rohner - uprightbass, lapsteel, composition
...and The Ghost Orchestra:
Nik Mäder - vox, bassclarinet, clarinet
David Bokel - piano, accordeon
Simon Rupp - guitar, banjo
Christian Bucher - marimba
Vincent Glanzmann - drum, percussion

Franky Silence’s latest work is full of swearing, moaning, ranting and raving. The protagonists know that they’re lost, but they don’t care anymore – they just continue.
Sabrina Troxler and Adi Rohner, a young artist couple, are Franky Silence. They have dedicated themselves to traditional American song writing, thus “Fallen” is characterized by gloomy references to blues, Folk Noir and Vaudeville chanson. Street Date: 2013-04-05 "Fallen EP" will be available as free download at http://franky-silence.ch  for a limited time

The opening track “Fallen” draws the listeners in with it's David Lynchesque opening bars and slides into a smooth melancholic slow dance. “Last Night” mystical and dark with a beatnik beat and echoy guitar with Sabrina's vocals lurking around like shadows on building walls. Josh Homme and Mark Lanegan's desert rocker “No one knows” gets a banjo and clarinet makeover giving it a jazzy gothic uplift. The last song on the EP "I Have To Go" a twangy sad ballad, leaves you wishing they didn't have to go and craving more.

The Ghost Orchestra with bass clarinet, accordion, banjo, marimba and waterphone creates an authentic soundscape – wistful and dark deserts, missed opportunities and thrown away happiness drifting over them. Desperados and fallen angels are travelling towards new horizons, which might bring salvation or, more probably, once more failure.
Skillfully composed, consistently arranged, with playful harmonies and chamber music subtleties, the band consisting of Nik Mäder, David Bokel, Simon Rupp, Christian Bucher and Vincent Glanzmann rumbles through a dimmed universe of sound. A sound, which could just as well unfold in a shabby theatre in the american bible belt.
To round off the artistic oeuvre, Franky Silence brought in Pablo Haller, who (for the second time after Franky Silence’s much-praised debut “Recordings For Imaginary Movies“) provided poetically condensed, hallucinogenic words for Troxler's alterable voice.

Feel Bad For March: CxCW Edition

This month we celebrate Couch By Couchwest (http://couchbycouchwest.com/). That’s the alternative music festival that can be enjoyed from the confines of your own home, on your very own luxurious couch! Who needs SxSW? You’ve gotta take time off from work and deal with crowds and drunkards. I don’t know about you, but I’m too broke and lazy to go to the trouble of heading to Austin. Criminy, you can be your own crowd and revel in your own drunkeness!
Thanks to AnnieTUFF (@AnnieTUFF) for this month’s artwork. Grab a beer, a shot or… some herb if you live in Colorado or Washington (like me!), kick back and listen to some tunes. Oh! And leave some comments!

1. Title: Aluga-se-Vende
Artist: Móveis Coloniais de Acaju (translates as “colonial mahogany wood-made furniture”)
Album [2005]: Idem
Submitted By: hoosier buddy
Comments: In the song, this couple breaks up and he says things to her about keys and the living room and brokers, all of which may make sense to him. What I love about it is the weird Bill Murray/Oingo Boingo vibe, the complicated but well-orchestrated arrangement, the drumming, and the way the song builds, then chills out a lot, and finally comes back like gangbusters to knock your socks off.
2. Title: Moving Furniture Around
Artist: The Handsome Family
Album: Odessa (1995)
Submitted By: toomuchcountry
Comments: Couches, love seats, ottomans, futons, etc. They’re all Sofa King pieces of furniture that must be moved from time to time.
3. Title: This Is A Notice
Artist: Mic Harrison And The High Score
Album (year): Still Wanna Fight
Submitted By: annieTUFF
Comments: Keeping with the CXCW theme I chose Mic Harrison and The High Score. I filmed Mic Harrison and The High Score’s CXCW video last year…in the dirtiest motel in Tennessee. No joke, that place was disgusting. I set my beer down to take some photos and when I went to pick it back up a roach was on the can. That motel is condemned now by the way… Anyway, back to the music, this song is on “Still Wanna Fight” the same album as the song they sang for CXCW last year “The Colonel Is Dead”. Good stuff, check it out.
4. Title: Da Couch Dat Burps
Artist: Da Yoopers
Album (Year): For Diehards Only (1995)
Submitted By: Gorrck
Comments: There’s a fine line between participation and mockery.
[Editor: FOR.THE.WIN! If I were to give awards for monthly contributions, this is the March winner.]
5. Title: Falling Apart
Artist: Billy Pilgrim
Album (year): Bloom (1995)
Submitted By: @philnorman
Comments: Feels like a CXCW song to me, “left me here in these ragged
chairs, stuffing snowing everywhere.” Golly, I loved this band. You
might know Kristian Bush now for being “the guy in the hat in
Sugarland.”
6. Title: Wicker Chair
Artist: Kings Of Leon
Album (Year): Holy Roller Novocaine (2003)
Submitted By: BoogieStudio22
Comments: I love early Kings Of Leon. Their sound was so ‘swampy’, but they had the occasional laid back song and this fits that lazy, laid-back ‘sofa/chair’ theme.
7. Title: Friends in Bottles
Artists: The Takers
Album (year): Taker Easy (2009)
Submitted By: Rockstar Aimz
Comments: This is one of the best songs of the last five years, however, to my knowledge, The Takers as a band no longer exist. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that they split in 2010. Devon Stuart, formerly of The Takers, and Michael Claytor played “Narrow Road” for CXCW 2011. At CXCW2012, Chase 56 did a damn good cover of “Friends in Bottles.”
8. Title: When Our Love Passed Out on the Couch
Artist: X
Album: Wild Gift (1981)
Submitted By: @tincanman2010 (http://tincanland.wordpress.com/)
Comments: Was tempted to send in The Couch by Alanis Morris Settee, but X tiCX a heap of CXCW boXes – to wit, crunchy guitars and depraved indifference to polite society. On TGIF, God gave man the couch so that we might spend our days of rest passed out or making out – or, in this case, making out with other girls while yours is passed out.
9. Title: Sleight of Hand
Artist: Kassy Key & the Raindoggs
Album (2012): Kassy Key & the Raindoggs
Submitted By: @popa2unes
Comments: Don’t know how they’ll all fit on a couch, but we shall see, I expect something really special shall transpire
10. Title: Run Away
Artist: The End Men
Album (year): Play With Your Toys (2013)
Submitted By: Simon
Comments: One of my favourite 2012 CXCW performances came from the The End Men, here’s a slice of primal rock n roll taken from their current album Play With your Toys available at http://theendmen.bandcamp.com
11. Title: Chimayo
Artist: Will Kimbrough
Album (Year): This (2000)
Submitted by: erschen
Comments: This guy has collaborated with people like Todd Snider, Jayhawks, Matthew Ryan and Guy Clark but is an great musician on his own.
12. Title: No Honey for Anybody
Artist: The Bear
Album (year): The Bear (2011)
Submitted By: TheOtherBrit
Comments: Never would’ve heard of the crew out of North Alabama if it weren’t for CXCW. Looking forward to their video this year!
13. Title: Italian Leather Sofa
Artist: Cake
Album (Year): Fashion Nugget (1996)
Submitted By: BoogieStudio22
Comments: Who doesn’t like Cake? I had this and Wicker Chair as my choices for this month’s comp and since we are a little light this month, I added this one too.
14. Title: Irene
Artist: Trixie Whitley
Album (Year): Fourth Corner (2013)
Submitted By: BoogieStudio22
Comments: What the hell?!? One more. Trixie Whitley is my current artist crush. I first heard her on Daytrotter in January and she’s won my ears. If you like neo-R&B/Soul, check her out. She’s the daughter of Chris Whitley, a well-regarded guitarist who died too young. You should check out catalog too.

Brown Bird - Fits of Reason

Artwork by Will Schaff.

Brown Bird’s two members, David Lamb and MorganEve Swain, continue to build their sound from the foundations of blues and American roots music, utilizing the simple foot-percussion, violin, cello and upright bass that they have become known for, while expanding Swain’s vocal presence and flaunting Lamb’s lyrical mastery. Recorded in their home-state of Rhode Island at Machines With Magnets, Fits of Reason is inspired by the writings of Omar Khayyam, Christopher Hitchens, and Plato, among others, and grapples with the human condition in a smooth but unapologetic departure from the band’s previous release, Salt for Salt. With the introduction of electric guitar, electric bass, and a more prominent display of the band’s Middle Eastern, metal, and psych-rock influences, Fits of Reason delves into heavier territory and invites the listener to hear with discerning ears.

Brown Bird spent most of 2012 on the road, supporting Trampled By Turtles, The Devil Makes Three, Yonder Mountain String Band and Horse Feathers, and wowed the crowd at the Newport Folk Festival with their first main-stage appearance. The band will continue criss-crossing the US in 2013, with a full US tour planned in April, and an appearance scheduled at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, CA. Fits of Reason will be released on Supply & Demand Music on April 2nd, 2013.

Bloody Lovely Audrey - Four Dark Eyes EP

Sinead Curry - Vocals | Rob Cleary - Guitars | Andy Cavenagh - Bass | Seb Guajardo - Drums

Bloody Lovely Audrey is raw raunchy rock and roll and I like it, no love it!. While their debut EP 'Animal' was an in your face ball grabber, on their sophomore effort, titled 'Four Dark Eyes', Sinead and the boys go straight  for your jugular and shake you like a voodoo rag doll. Over heavy primal beats and soaring riffs, Sinead serenade's you like a wild banshee dripping sweat and blood from a rock god sacrificial ritual.

released 16 July 2010 debut EP 'Animal' is the sound of four people having a damn good time. It's louder than a riot, sexier than double D cleavage, and unapologetically in your face....like double D cleavage.
It's an attempt to take the brutal energy and dirty, dirty noise we put into our live shows and compress it all onto one little plastic disc. These are songs about life, love and lust. Especially lust.

The Game is The Game by Michael Taggart

Like a well crafted Boston Lager, American Thread brew a blend of Americana, Alt-Country, Roots Rock, and Celtic influences, with a thread of debauchery rising like the head of a well poured beer throughout. Every song on this album is a standout and you'll find yourself returning to this album time and time again.

Brooklyn's Uncle Leon and the Alibis album Wild Ways is like a late night stumble and tumble into the last neon sign lit smokey bar open way past last call, deliriously bleary eyed you find a seat in the corner next to a lady named Big  Maybelle order a beer and a shot, glance leeringly at Maybelle and toast 'Fuck It'  then the music catchs your attention and coming over old tube amps, loud and raunchous, Uncle Leon and the Alibis  are playing their unique brand of whiskey fused, roadhouse honky tonk, capturing your mood completely 'whiskey, women, pills and booze still can't kill these lonsome blues', their in your head man what are they doing in your head? You look around and everyone's a bipping and bopping to the music, they're in everyone's head man, your eyes clear a bit, you sing along a few verses and in a minute your foot stomping and hootin' and a hollerin' with the crowd. Fuck the world!

Bio:
Previously, Uncle Leon and the Alibis have released two “quick-n-dirty” self-produced studio albums: "Drunk" and "Roller Derby Saved My Soul", as well as the 2010 live album, "That’s My Shit!" Uncle Leon also recorded a limited-edition vinyl single, “The Bartender”, for Metropolicana Records in Scotland.

Two of the band’s songs, “Big Idea” and “Drugstore Roses”, appeared in the independent feature film "My Best Day", which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. The song “Roller Derby Saved My Soul” has been featured in two Australian documentaries—ABC TV’s “Roller Derby Dolls”, and "This is Roller Derby"—and continues to show up in various fan-created YouTube videos. The song has also inspired a theatrical stage play, a few serious essays, and at least one tattoo.

Locally, they’ve had the pleasure of opening for several notable indie-roots characters, including The Legendary Shack Shakers, Joe Buck, and Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers. Uncle Leon is also the founder of the website Brooklyn Country.
Fueled by a boozy mix of classic honky-tonk, high-energy garage-punk, and good old-fashioned filthy talk, Uncle Leon and the Alibis seem determined to drag modern “Roots” music, kicking and screaming, back to the gritty back roads it grew up on.

#cxcw Couch Klieg light: Fifth on the Floor & The Dead Exs

Justin Wells of Fifth on the Floor is a staple at Couch By Couchwest, as are The Dead Exs, always out of gum and packing punches, so when I saw this little twitter exchange needless to say I got all a twitter.

Justin  plays “January in Louisiana” from their album “Ashes & Angels” on a train in cold, cold Lexington, Kentucky.

In the middle of Couch By Couchwest on March 12th Fifth on the Floor dropped their 3rd album 'Ashes & Angels' featuring songs writing by all members of the band, Aaron Earl Graham - Drums, Vocals
Jason Parsons - Bass, Vocals, Matty Rodgers - Guitar, Vocals, Harmonica, Justin Wells - Vocals, Guitar.
It kicks off with an ole timey slidin' and a fiddlinjamoree devil went down to Twangville 'Whiskey' and slides like a warm shot into the riff heavy, beat pounding ballads 'Shotgun' and 'January in Louisiana'.  On 'The Last Opry' Matty's  just fuckin' burn the Opry down with molotov cocktail that jumps fire barrier's and takes the torch right into 'Burnin' Nashville'
'Wild Child' features Shooter Jennings on Piano and Diamond Bobman Emmett on organ for a rock riff laden windows down pounding on the steering wheel ripper of a song. Eli Hall on Petal Steel and Shooter Jennings on piano join them on 'Angels in the Snow'. The next song 'Wine' features the magnificent vocals of Rachel Brooke I don't think anything more needs to be said about that. 'Hangman's Reel' is the perfect hanging at the train yard waiting for a hop sing-along for all us vagabonds at heart, the guitars bellow of destinations to be and Justin wails like freight train wheels on full steam. The next song features Brandon Bowlds on Banjo Benjamin Ringle on Dobro, Don Rogers on fiddle with Matty on Harmonica on the melancholic 'What For'.
'Same Ol' Thing'  closing out the album 'One Big Holiday' features Rachel Brooke on backgound vocals and Shooter Jennings back on piano and Eli Hall adding his fantastic petal steel
Shooter Jennings produced the record at DeadBird Studios in Louisville, KY.  The album features performances by Jennings, Rachel Brooke, Benjamin Ringel (The Delta Saints), and Kentucky musicians Brandon Bowlds, Eli Hall, and Don Rogers.

Track Listing:
1.  Whiskey
2.  Shotgun
3.  January in Louisiana
4.  The Last Opry
5.  Burnin’ Nashville Down
6.  Wild Child
7.  Angels in the Snow
8.  Wine (ft. Rachel Brooke)
9.  Hangman’s Reel
10.  What For
11.  Same Old Thing
12.  One Big Holiday

The Dead Exs returned to CXCW with a new song 'Don't Mess With The Girl From Texas' from their sophomore album 'Relovolution' released 16 September 2012 reviewed here
So with those two tweets I started this post off in mind I thought what better way to satisfy my need for these two bands to jam together, then with a Fifth on the Floor/The Dead Exs playlist. see/hear below..

#cxcw Couch Klieg light: Shinyribs - Gulf Coast Museum

On March 16th at Couch By Couchwest Shinyribs aka Kevin Russell front man for The Gourds graced the couch with a killer cover of  Willie Nelson’s “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground.” Kevin's vocal and musical range is amazing and is on full display on his upcoming album 'Gulf Coast Museum' due to drop April 16th on Nine Mile Records.... continued below video:

The aptly titled Gulf Coast Museum has the sounds of a leisurely sail along the Gulf coast from Key West to Corpus Christi, with detours into the many inlets, bays, and lagoons where influences from as far away as Motown, Chicago flow effortlessly on the stunning Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes cover, If You Don't Know Me By Now and  'Bolshevik Sugarcane' and 'Sweet Potato' and mingle perfectly with the Leon Russellesque 'Sweeter Than The Scars' and the margaritaville for the rest of us, 'Take Me Lake Charles'. Nashville wanders it's way into the journey on country crooner's 'Somebody Else' and 'Song Of Lime Juice & Despair', Not to be left out 'Teaxs Talking' hits the Honky Tonkin' twang sweet spot.

First Listen: Bolshevik Sugarcane and Take Me Lake Charles

Track List:

        1.     Sweeter Than The Scars
2. Take Me Lake Charles
3. Limpia Hotel (Chihuahua Desert)
4. Somebody Else
5. Texas Talking
6. Bolshevik Sugarcane
7. Sweet Potato
8. Song Of Lime Juice & Despair
9. If You Don't Know Me By Now

This video was recorded live in Little Rock's Fellowship Hall Sound, the recording studio in Hillcrest shared by Isaac Alexander, Jason Weinheimer (an old friend of Russell's) and Spradlin. This song, a preview from a forthcoming album from Russell's side-project Shinyribs, was recorded last October after a performance by The Gourds at White Water Tavern.

Shout Outs: Couch By Couchwest 2013

The good folks over at Couch By Couchwest have pulled off something truly amazing and historic for cxcw2013 an influx of submissions while I don’t know the exact numbers of submissions it dwarfed last year’s event which dwarfed the inaugural 2011 event, the amount of participation was so high they even had to extend the festivities an additional day.  They even snagged an interview in a little ole music publication named Billboard!

I sat glued to my computer for eight days, afraid to take my regularly scheduled naps in fear of missing something; I shunned showers, survived on a diet of libations and snack foods while each video that was posted offered a new discovery or a treat from a favorite band/artist. While it may take you some time, I cannot suggest strongly enough how much you need to go over to the site and check it out, whether you were paying attention during the week or were somehow in the dark about the event there is a cornucopia of deliciousness awaiting your eyes and ears.

Now over the coming weeks you should be on the lookout for coverage from various blogs as lists are culled, performances highlighted and the awesomeness is relived. Now I found some new that blew me away and saw new songs by old favorites, I will save those for another day.

What I want to do here is highlight and thank the bands and artists that put up with my persistent nudging and reminders about submitting and taking part in this year’s event and those that returned for a second year and to the others that wished to but were unable see you next year!  They all were awesome and patient with me many rearranging their busy schedules, others with many questions and those that jumped and ran with it. Many, Many thanks to all of you!

When I contacted Tony Tedesco from the Full Fathom Five about participating his enthusiasm was immediate and intensive, he set about opening his studio club house to local New Jersey bands and letting them come in and record they’re submissions, and he supplied some amazing talent to the event. Here they all are in a playlist:

It was truly an amazing week at Couch By Couchwest 2013 and I will be spending all year revisiting all the truly fantastic talent that graced the pages of the Internets Oldest, Longest running online Music Festival, where the beer is cheaper, and the only hipster is you.

A few were unable to get thier videso in by the deadline due to thechnical reasons or other mishaps: I will inculed them here:
